Is it just me or is Mastodon a bit slower than normal this morning?

So last night I canceled my personal #ClaudeCode subscription as I have been struggling with an addiction to the dopamine loop it provides.

I thought I could channel my spare time into something useful with the help of an agent, but when I started getting that sinking feeling of being hooked I knew it was time to call it quits.

But today has been a struggle filling that void. Man #anthropic really turned the engagement loop to max.

Some cognitive dissonance I’m experiencing.

I absolutely love Claude Code: It really is a product that is a delight to use while Opus 5.5 excels across a variety of domains.

But at the same time, I abhor Big Tech’s walled garden approach, keeping us locked inside an enshitification treadmill, squeezing us for every dollar during an age of unparalleled inequality.

I fear what Anthropic might become. Am I alone in this conundrum?

A Haitian Canadian novelist had his debut pulled from the Goncourt longlist last month over alleged AI use - mostly on the strength of an AI detector score, which he disputes. The Caine Prize is now looking into its winner too.

The flurry of news items makes me curious: As a society where do we draw the line when it comes to having LLMs assist with writing and why? Which do you think, or reply with an alternative.

Watched David Krakauer on StarTalk this weekend. His take: LLMs are capable, not intelligent. What I think they're missing is wisdom - intuition from experience.

So I had Claude interview me on whether an agent with memory could grow some. I landed on an adviser that argues with me but never makes the final call.

Would you want an AI that pushes back, or one that agrees?

Had a weird moment in Claude's Memory settings. I left my cursor in the text box, it started cycling lines, and the first one said "My dog's name is Beans."

Beans was in my lap at the time - panting.

It's almost certainly placeholder text (the next line gave me a baseball career I never had). Still, for a few seconds I was a believer.

Has an AI ever seemed to know something it shouldn't?

The more I read about AI, the more it seems like everyone lands in 1 of 4 camps:

Booster - it's the next industrial revolution, get on board or get left behind

Technologist - useful in certain domains, but the financing/business side is irresponsible

Skeptic - overhyped, a cheap imitation of what people actually produce

Abolitionist - built on stolen work and used by the wealthy to hold down wages

Which is closest to you? If none, reply with yours.

Been reading about the LLM "torture chamber" debate. I don't think LLMs will ever be conscious. But the part that gives me pause is the person's side - knowingly putting something in a position where it's tortured and can't decline. Plus... what if I am wrong?

What does running that do to the person running it?

Read an essay tonight on whether calling an LLM "intelligent" shrinks what the word means for people. At first I was unconvinced - what makes a human thought automatically more important?

Then Claude reminded me I'd said art requires experience and a viewpoint. I think mortality gives us meaning.

In which instances could an artificial mind meet a biological one?

Watched Ed Zitron on The Tech Report this week and one question stuck with me: where are all the chips?

Even Microsoft's CEO has said they have chips sitting in inventory they can't plug in. My take - Nvidia can force companies to buy and hold, and the data centres can't get built fast enough.

Should big cloud companies have to disclose how many chips are actually online?

Started a new nightly routine: Claude interviews me a topic I'm interested in, and I publish my rough draft. First topic: what I'm building toward.

It noticed my site's pipeline is polished while the writing is thin, then asked if perfecting the machine is a way of not looking in the mirror. Well played.

The last version of Hobby Hero had an LLM write every hockey game - box score, three stars and a story, 20 times a matchup. It read like the real thing and cost like it too, so I shut it down.

The rebuild is plain math: a goal model per team, fed recent form and the starting goalie. No LLM touches the result. I wanted to get a quick PoC out before opening night!

With the NHL season about to start (and Hockey Night in Canada now behind Sportsnet's paywall), I started thinking back to Coach's Corner.

Ron MacLean spent decades as the steady voice beside Don Cherry. So, with Ron as my inspiration: how can an AI agent act as a guardrail against our worst tendencies?

(Fair warning: the bot in my margins has notes on Ron.)

I'm a web developer from Ontario, Canada - lifelong Montreal Canadiens fan and avid hockey card collector.

Tired of algorithmic rage bait, so I'm looking for a new community.

I'm here for lively debates in web dev, cognitive science, AI, hockey and software architecture. I also write about these in my digital garden (link in bio).

My handle is from one of many shelved side projects, a hockey card app I plan to resurrect.
