    Straight line cartography?
Do you mean "The Mercator projection is a cylindrical map projection introduced by Flemish geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569. "
Or the borders of the USA big square states in the middle, and various straight lines in Africa which tended to have various colonial powers associated.

(We didn't really have uniforms, but we dressed uniformly, suit and tie. Cricket clubs have blazers, and colours etc. )

I was thinking of the straight lines that divided African countries - splitting tribes and causing tension that still exist today.

Not my area, but did they divide existing countries, or establish/create/define administrative areas, and later pass them on to successors? Not ideal, but establishing borders by defensible features fought over for generations has its drawbacks as well.
