    As a Canadian-British dual citizen, I am begging #Albertans to take my word for this.

    The same forces who brainwashed so many people into voting for Brexit are drooling at the prospect of #Alberta voting for separation.

    This is what they do: it's called divide and conquer. And while you might have many legitimate reasons to feel agrieved, isolation doesn't solve your problems. It exacerbates them greatly.

    Brexit diminished the UK beyond imagining.

    @Remittancegirl It is absolutely a play for weakening government power in Alberta. It's people who want to pay less for the oil, pollute more while extracting it, and contribute less to hospitals, schools, and roads.

    @Remittancegirl as a Brit living in Britain

    That's a hard yes.

    It was so divisive. I don't think anyone feels like they got what they voted for, but many feel they got what they voted against.

    And the same hate-spewing rightwing bot-wankers keep bringing up Swexit at any opportunity here in Sweden. They're still confused on joining NATO. But keep being mad at Ukrainians getting to use their passports as travel passes on local transit here in Stockholm. Etc.
    And decades of "surprising" connections between Kremlin organisations and the SD.

    @Remittancegirl Indeed. I curse the brexiteers, and those like David Cameron who enabled them, daily. And that's coming from someone who can fairly easily secure a right to live and work in the EU if I want (not the case for many young people, who have had a world of opportunity stolen from them by those dark forces and dirty people).

    @wauz How good is your English, because this reads as really fucking insulting. Did you mean it that way?

    Wasn't meant as an insult. But, you're right, I'm German. Intercultural communication is sometimes pretty difficult, especially when it comes to things one might see as humor and the other doesn't.
    More difficult: I'm a dialect speaker, even inside Germany are some mindset frictions. Actually, I did check my English text via Google translate and there was no hint of being insulting

    @wauz Never rely on google to explain nuance to you. I'm glad it wasn't meant as insulting. I usually ask if I suspect a bridge language is being used.

    @Remittancegirl is it even technically possible for alberta to separate? Like, US states love talking about separating, but that's borderline impossible when you break it down.

    @Remittancegirl @CordiallyChloe hard agree here. The original separation referendum item was ruled unconstitutional, so Alberta’s premier replaced it with a referendum item that asks whether or not Alberta should begin the process of adding a constitutional referendum item to a ballot for public vote in the future. At least one court opinion indicates that no such item would be constitutional. So the only purpose for the current ballot item is the toxic effect it will have on civil society.

    @Remittancegirl
    > Physically speaking, we cannot separate. We cannot remove our respective sections from each other, nor build an impassable wall between them. A husband and wife may be divorced, and go out of the presence, and beyond the reach of each other; but the different parts of our country cannot do this. They cannot but remain face to face; and intercourse, either amicable or hostile, must continue between them.

    @Remittancegirl I worry that the same playbook is at work with respect to Scotland and independence too, but on the other hand I can hardly blame them for wanting a divorce after we dragged them into Brexit.

    @PoliceStateUK @Remittancegirl It was quite the reverse. See the video London Calling on YouTube. The UK state has had a long history of using dirty tricks, propaganda and state resources, including money to counter any moves toward self-government. From long before the Act of Union with Ireland in 1801and ever since.

    @samueljohnson There is and has never been a power structure that did not seek to preserve itself. The only question is... how much atrocity is any given power structure willing to commit in the goal of its power?

    And that really varies from nation to nation. But there is no ideal 'master'. There is no governing body that doesn't, either through manipulation, brainwashing, threat of force or force, that doesn't seek to preserve its own existence.

    @samueljohnson This is the essence of all human organisation. It has played out on the level of families, of tribes, of regions, of nations and of multinational entities.

    There are only two things that can mitigate this tendency. Ethics and consequences. The first has seldom been dependable.

    @Remittancegirl Economics and relative security. All I’ve read is that Brexit was a disaster for the UK. I’ve listened to the idiot argument about Texas seceding when Biden was POTUS although there might be a time when things get so broken that a breakup for the US might be conceivable. In any case, strength in numbers is the best, most secure path forward even if there’s idiots to be restrained for the greater good. 🤔

    @Remittancegirl
    I'd also want to urge anyone who doesn't believe in voting in this for whatever reason, such as it not being possible, to vote against it anyway, to send a loud message to those who keep trying to stir up trouble to hopefully not try again. Maybe even help expose these liars and manipulators for what they are.

    I don't think that this is even really about separation. It's just a way for the politicians to get people riled up enough to keep voting for them and distracted from how they are being harmed by the very people they voted for. It's like you said Madeleine, it's divide and conquer, even just within Alberta.
