@nina_kali_nina my attempt to switch from Mac to Linux is at 18 months and not very close to done, so, I won’t be trying to go from Linux to BSD in a single weekend - tho once I’m not using the Mac I might try to put BSD on it
@ShadSterling good news is that if you get used to the software (desktop, office suite, etc etc) you'll likely find it available on NetBSD, unless it's something very niche and professional

I'm in a particularly fun pickle because I do use some pretty niche software like the guitar amp simulator ToneLib GFX. It might work on FreeBSD with the Linuxulator but that's about it.
@daemonspudguy @ShadSterling NetBSD Linux compat is worth a try, I think - I've even had Steam starting with it, albeit only once and an old version
@ShadSterling@mastodon.social @nina_kali_nina@tech.lgbt
ToneLib uses the JACK Audio Connection Kit, which I don't think works on the NetBSD Linux translator thing. It might be possible to get it running in a VM even if that would be silly.
@daemonspudguy @ShadSterling hmm I think if it connects to JACK, it might be possible to connect to the native NetBSD jackd then!

Of course this is largely academic because my GPU is an Nvidia one. A 3070, no less. Hardware acceleration just ain't happening on NetBSD. Maybe at some point in the future but right now, no.
@daemonspudguy @ShadSterling yeah, that's a bummer :( I think it shouldn't be impossible to implement an io pass through for an emulator, though.

I only own a 3070 because my RX 580 died in the summer of 2025 and it was the only thing in stock that wouldn't take weeks ot months to ship.
@nina_kali_nina I checked while I was writing the other branch, and it does look like LibreOffice and Vivaldi are available on NetBSD. There are a few other things I’ll need to figure out too, but that’s a good start. I don’t know anything about BSD GUIs, I’m kindof hoping they have something less annoying than Wayland, but either X11 or Wayland would be acceptable
@ShadSterling there's X11 out of the box and there's Wayland work in progress. I haven't tried Vivaldi but I hope there's a port
