The Trump administration is “building a case” to strip Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) of her U.S. citizenship and eventually deport her, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Department of Homeland Security agents raided the Minnesota congresswoman’s home on Monday as part of “an ongoing federal criminal investigation,” the Justice Department said.

Citing U.S. officials and people familiar with the investigation, The Journal reported that part of the probe is looking into how Omar became a U.S. citizen after arriving from Somalia decades ago as a refugee.

A probe of her family’s immigration paperwork is said to be checking whether Omar or her late father listed her as 17 rather than 18 when he applied for citizenship.

The distinction is important since at age 17 she would have qualified automatically for citizenship as a minor, rather than needing to make her own immigration application.

Omar, 44, became a U.S. citizen in 2000 and has previously denied accusations of immigration fraud.

The report underlines that the scrutiny of Omar is part of the Trump administration’s “unprecedented effort to denaturalize U.S. citizens by proving they lied in the process of obtaining citizenship, filing dozens of lawsuits.”

“Omar’s case, if it proceeds, could become the highest-profile —and most controversial — part of that effort,” it adds.
