    The last good version I could find is from early 2014;

    web.archive.org/web/2014021000

    There are later versions in the Wayback Machine that look superficially similar, but are infested with spam. Also, 2014 is about when I remember it shutting down.

    Like the Transition Towns use of Ning, this is a case study in the importance of separating a data commons from its hosting. So it's availability is not subject to the internal politics or commercial imperatives of groups running websites, etc.

    It would be fascinating to try a project like the Bank of Real Solutions again as a federated network.

    Different groups could host pattern libraries for geographical areas (eg Aotearoa like BoRS), or particular topics (eg patterns relating to food). Federated in some way, so they could share and search across all the public data; text about design patterns, articles about real world examples, and so on. Which could be published under a Free Culture license (eg CC BY-SA like Wikipedia).

    Really?! Not feigning suprise here, I'm genuinely surprised that you don't know more about it than me, given your interests.

    Transition Towns is (was?) a permaculture-inspired movement founded by Rob Hopkins, author of the Transition Handbook;

    transitiontowns.nz/archive/tra

    Based on his experiences with the first Transition Town, Totnes in England.

    @rimu can tell you more about it than me, he ran (runs?) that website.

    Yep, haven’t heard of Transition Towns before. I generally overlap with that, and have spent quite a few years as part of a local Transition group, but our local group are not listed on that site and they’re quite a lot broader than the “energy descent” and other topics that it seems to focus on.

    Looks like transitiontowns dot org has expired.

    Oh right, same thing. IIRR Transition Towns was the original name of the movement (based on the Totnes model), then the "towns" was dropped because lots of Transition groups started in bio-localities that weren't 'towns' as such.

    > our local group are not listed on that site

    Most kiwi Transition groups moved to Ning for a while, then scattered when they pulled the rug. A perfect case for federation ; )

    Speaking of which, I don't see you on FediHood.social yet. You can login with your Mastodon account. I see 10 folks in Aotearoa on there so far.

    I just emailed Permaculture in NZ about setting up a dedicated FH service for Aotearoa. I encourage Transition folks to consider this too.

    > Looks like transitiontowns dot org has expired

    Ae. They redirected to transitionnetwork.org in early 2011. I guess they looked at the web traffic recently and decided it wasn't worth renewing the domain.
