There is a cost, which should be acknowledged upfront: the alternatives are not as polished or well-integrated.
And, don’t try to save money: put it into an internal software group who can then contribute to the adopted solution‘s elements. Don’t just donate money: build sovereign capability, and use it to address (upstream) the missing attributes that you discover.
So many of these well-intentioned projects fail on these points.
