Don’t forget that Christopher Columbus isn’t just a violent cruel asshole by modern standards. He was also seen as (and arrested for being) a violent, cruel asshole during the time he lived

@pfriedma I'd never forget that, as I never knew it and don't really care.

You don't care about truth? You're fine with being permeated by lies?

@RD4Anarchy @pfriedma I'm not permeated by lies; I have no information on the person C.C. was, and I don't care to know.

@pfriedma we will #remember
I hope (and I'm sure) that Italians can find *someone* better to celebrate?

@tsyum @pfriedma Italian here, apart from names of squares/streets we don't celebrate Columbus that much.
We don't have Columbus day or anything like that.
P.s. highly recommended the theatre comedy "Isabella, three sailing ships, and a Con man" by Dario Fo. It describes Columbus really well.

The celebration was an Italian American and also US Catholic thing about 100 years ago. Trying to find a way to convince the Protestant mostly British American majority to accept them as American.
It's definitely outlived it's purpose at best.

@pfriedma not just arrested, but tried, convicted, and stripped of his titles and lands awards to him by the crown. The governorship of Hispaniola was awarded to his family in perpetuity, but then taken away as punishment (clearly insufficient, but at least it was something).
