I gave a talk today about some compiler things to some compiler people, and just posted a recording (vimeo.com/1234257957) and slides (cfallin.org/pubs/vmil2026_nigh).

In brief: I made JavaScript-running-in-a-Wasm-module go way way faster by building a static type inference and AOT compiler, now dubbed "NightMonkey". It's been tons of fun!

(the "why?!" is covered in the first part of the talk -- certainly a unique set of requirements but IMHO it's well-motivated for our niche)

@cfallin congrats. Was hoping for static type inference in StarlingMonkey since our exchange about @js2wasm in early May. You will have seen bun is doing something similar.

@ttraenkler @js2wasm Yep, I've been working on this since late March or so; happy to finally be able to talk about it :-) It's definitely in the air -- I am glad that many folks are trying their own approaches here!

Definitely. Thanks for sharing the presentation - an interesting read, aligns well with my take on this, though coming from a compiler expert it’s worth studying more closely. My IR is still in development since about the same time, but having much more ground to cover it will take some more time. Will consider publishing it as a standalone module and already tried it successfully lowering it to Porffors new C IR.
