Oct 3, 2026, 10:09 PM@jan Dankort and BankAxept in the Nordics, or Multibanco-only (SIBS) cards in Portugal, for example, do exist and are accepted by most of the respective country merchants (they also have online payment options, and Dankort even works in conjunction/as a Visa/Mastercard card abroad and in merchants that don't accept Dankort). As I said, the interoperability is the weaker point today, the fact that banks continue to issue Visa/Mastercard cards is a close second.
The Baltics and the Nordics are preparing backup solutions to Visa/Mastercard and totally off-line payments, but they are also taking more time than they should.
