    @Sheril

    Just part of his short "Imagine":

    "Imagine a blob of mud whirling madly around one of those suns. Imagine yourself standing on that blob of mud, whirling with it, whirling through time and space to an unknown destination. Imagine!" -- Frederic Brown

    They used to show this the first year SciFi cable television was on.

    @Sheril What gets me sometimes is that scientists that look for exoplanets are looking for environments like our own in the goldilocks zone, some refer to them as "paradise climates". Perhaps a redefining of what paradise means to humans given the past and present unpredictability of our climate and should we really measure a planet's ability to sustain life on our own which, let's face it, offered a very slim chance to get us as far as we have.

    @Sheril And what do we do with our fragile slice of space and time? Destroy it with fossil fuels and bombing each other.

    And despite being unable to properly manage and operate the gift of a free, fully equipped orbital habitat, some (Hi Elon! Hello Jeff!) believe they'll do better starting from scratch even while axiomatically relatively impoverished and still freighted with human nature. :bloblewd:

    @Doug_Bostrom @Sheril it's a little weird that you think that's something they believe rather than simply something they say to manipulate people.

    @Amoshias @Sheril

    Both individuals show signs of arrested development, with juvenile enthusiasms appearing to override inhibitions grounded in real world limitations.

    Firmer information with better acuity would of course be interesting to hear.

    @Doug_Bostrom @Sheril I tend to be a fairly negative person with a very dark view of humanity. I find it impossible to see this as honest enthusiasm, but I do appreciate where you are coming from.

    @Sheril This quite surprises me, well the final sentance does. Terry Pratchet was a Task Máster at understanding and defining the inconsistencias of the human psych and parodying homo sapiens in all their guises, shapes and sizes. That being so I would have thought he would have found it extremely believe able.

    Susan: Good. Now, tell me--
    Death: WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF YOU HADN'T SAVED HIM?
    Susan: Yes.
    Death: THE SUN WOULD NOT HAVE RISEN.
    Susan: Then what would have happened?
    Death: A MERE BALL OF FLAMING GAS WOULD HAVE ILLUMINATED THE WORLD.
    Susan: Alright, I'm not stupid. You're saying that humans need fantasies to make life bearable?
    Death: NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.
