Like the emperor's new clothes, but the con men trick merchants to invest in building giant factories in town that are loud, and pay people an exploitive wage to burn clothes because it produces more magic fabric ingredients and the process uses lots of energy and adds to an already bad pollution problem and every tavern everyone is talking about how amazing the magic fabric is even though it's expensive and they haven't really figured out what to do with it except that it sure seems to make tailoring easier and now the price of spinning wheels and looms is sky high because they're all in the big magic fabric factories which keep ordering more and the dressmakers all hate their industry.
