Sep 26, 2026, 9:55 PMGood morning #CBR. I have seen a huge moth fluttering around the balcony lately, then last night many more flew briefly below at dusk.
It is a long time since I have seen this distinctive shape here and hoping maybe the #BogongMoths are back again. Have they been seen by others or am I just hopeful and it is a different moth?
@david_coombe_cbr @RHW you can report sightings here (and it does look like they are having a good year) https://mothtracker.swifft.net.au/

Thank you for this link. I have just had another short visit from a moth this morning since writing. Will definitely take a photo for the tracker. What a great change to see a return we thought were disappearing.
@RHW yes, they've been bouncing off our heads on evening walks since Thursday
Reporting in from the Deep South of Canberra*, I noted that there was one moth yesterday on the deck, but it flew away so fast that I did not get the chance of looking at it long enough to identify it. I have not seen another moth since.
* no, not South Canberra, no not the Woden Valley, no not Tuggeranong … but Lanyon Valley … to which I am fairly sure that at least 90% of the ACT Government does not know exists.
Sep 27, 2026, 9:08 AM@Devorppa For a dreadful moment I thought Lanyon had been swallowed up by development. 😱
TIL Lanyon Valley exists and is near Pine Island. Hmm, once a distant, secluded, discreet nudie swimming spot. Long long ago in a Canberra far far away...
Delighted to hear you have a #bogongmoth. And I just managed to photo one here in #Belconnen CBD.😊
