@shriramk @samth @sandorspruit The other thing is that many objectors think it is not programming, but have never used it!
That is the definition of ignorance. Not in the sense that means "dumb", but the one that means "don't know about it".
I can say that it is still the same game as in SICP or K&R, it just goes faster ...because I actually tried it.
If you just tell it "do stuff", you will have a shitty program.
@sayrer @shriramk @samth Many objectors have their objections on completely different grounds, that have little or nothing to do with code working or not. The projected energy use for some data centers, for example, is larger than the energy use of entire countries. If this pushes us over the edge on climate change tipping points, well, then your code no longer matters 😬
Also, while you experience “it is faster”, studies and observations actually measuring speed indicate the exact opposite. The nature of the work changes so drastically that it slows people down significantly. How you perceive all of this depends on your level of experience as well. TL;DR: there are dozens of angles on this.
Sep 23, 2026, 11:09 AM@sandorspruit @sayrer @shriramk I agree that people have objections other than that it doesn't work. However, the claim that it slows you down is now out of date. Even the people in the original study say that.
@samth @sayrer @shriramk Do you have a reference for that claim being “out of date”, as it completely contradicts my intuition? Understanding and working with the code produced by somebody else, human or AI, is an entirely different line of work IMHO. I would expect that increased cognitive load to effect one’s productivity, one way or another.
Sep 23, 2026, 12:39 PM@samth @sandorspruit @shriramk yes, the models have improved a lot, and continue to improve.
@samth @sandorspruit @shriramk It really helps with motivation, too. If it’s one of those days where you’re not feeling it, you can just tell it to run the profiler. I have a pretty big Rust codebase that I do this on. I wrote the core of it in 2025, but now Claude just extends my work.
The person whose work I know best at Anthropic seems to be using it to write TLA+.
