Back then it was really really hard to get enough money for rails girls summer of code. Nowadays nearly all DEI non profits are gone because of lack of funding.
But a nazi dotfile repo gets millions of dollars within weeks.
This is totally fine.

@bitboxer "Back then it was really really hard to get enough money for rails girls summer of code."
Of course it was. Because RGSOC refused to do The Work. They refused to have any kind of organisation or system around fundraising. They reinvented the wheel each time they needed to fundraise. Their fundraising consisted of pleading like a five year old for money to buy lollies, not an organisation of merit.
I got Clue to give RGSOC $1000, simply by asking, because they hadn't been asked before.
@bitboxer so when https://helloclue.com is perfectly willing and able to give money, they're based in the same city as RGSOC who could not be bothered asking, yet, I, an RGSOC student did so, that speaks volumes re: exactly how useless RGSOC was and continued to be as an organisation. I'd usually say do better, but the whole thing simply needs to be burnt to the ground with DHH. Grateful I left tech, because what a fucking shitshow.
@gusseting that is not true. They asked *a lot* of companies. My wife was part of the organization team of it. I know first hand how much work went into this stuff. And they had a process. But they also always said: please everyone reach out. Sometimes they asked the wrong person who blocked everything. Getting another angle into a company then unlocked it and it looked “easy” because “they forgot to ask” when in reality it’s complexer. Because humans.
@bitboxer "And they had a process. But they also always said: please everyone reach out."
If they had a process, then they wouldn't be opening up that process by letting anyone fundraise with zero onboarding and backup documentation. Which is exactly what they did. That's not a process, that's flinging shit at a wall to see what sticks.
As I have proven with my experience with RGSOC.
If you have a problem with white supremacy, well, glasshouses, ruby/ruby on rails.
@bitboxer Did I say that they didn't ask a lot of companies? No. I did not. I said "Their fundraising consisted of pleading like a five year old for money to buy lollies, not an organisation of merit."
I also said that they never asked Clue, and I know this, because Clue told me. Clue at that time were a small Berlin based women run startup with limited staff. I knew about them in Australia, so how RGSOC could not know about them and reach out when they're in the same city is beyond me.
