Mastodon is a great application, and I enjoy using it a lot too. But the prosocial web as mentioned in the article goes way further than that.

Due to historical reasons and the accepted work methods by which the fediverse evolves, microblogging has become the dominant communication mode on the fediverse. And if you come to think of it, it is a very weird one. Most people in their day-to-day life offline don't microblog (standing on a soapbox in the busy market square, and shouting a random message). With microblogging the only comms mode, all other modes of communication are squashed into one, and there is context collapse. Many of the social anti-patterns of Twitter also do exist here. There is a soft, fluffy outward appearance, but also a harsh parasocial underbelly to fedi that sometimes rears up. In part this is due because we are mashed into apps as 'users' and the feature sets aren't tailored to our needs, do not accomodate us well.

I have to agree with you about the evolution of mastodon. It's not a click once social network. Personally, im happy about that. It seems to be the best way of connecting people, information, and social media without the marketing of platforms such as Twitter or others that are just automated with point click. I don't expect any social network to be perfect, but so far, so good. I'm new to mastodon and still have much to learn.
