Time ago we replaced password_verify() with an industry-leading best-in-class enterprise-grade third-party solution that comes in a handy 1 GB docker image for development environments and a cluster of containers for live environments, because you should not roll up your own authentication, and it has vastly exceeded my expectations when it comes to pain and suffering.
