The best time to find slime molds is in the summer after heavy rain. Well, that’s exactly what we have had at the house… or should I say, ON the house??

Slime molds have 2 stages: plasmodial and fruiting. In the first, they are capable of movement. They can climb things. In the second, they can have very cool shaped bodies as they prepare to release their spores.

This one climbed the wooden siding of my house. 😳

A collection of tiny, thin sporangia, are propped up on even tinier stalks. Each is attached to the wooden siding of my house. Each is brown and resemble hot dogs on a stick.
Looking at it straight on as it is about 2 ½ feet up the side of the house. The mold is surrounding a small nail, or insect hole. There are 2 other holes nearby. The brown speckling under the mold are spores that have been released.
Looking at it from the side where the fruiting bodies are a bit more in focus and the smear of spores can be seen.
