I needed to move past the 4 commands I knew for using vi editor. I went to PaperBackSwap where I have sent a few used books and had some credits and was delighted to find a copy of Learning the vi Editor (4th Ed) It's got that plastic comb binding so the book lays open flat. And it is such a good explanation for a newbie like me on what to learn first and practice. I'm thrilled. I don't know what the new versions that include vim are like, but this feels like gold, because it is just what I needed.

Hi Anita! I don't know if that's your style of learning things, but when I'm trying to learn a new concept or software, I often search for "software name + course" or class or tutorial on Youtube. There are often people who produce really great and in depth videos, and for me these are a great resource to learn.

I haven't watched anything on Vim so far, but there are a lot of videos available:

I love those videos when it is about doing something with my hands where I want to see the thing being done. I find it difficult to pick up typing on a computer. Both the audio and the visual seem too fast. Yeah, that's what the problem is, they usually are going too fast for me and I then have trouble backing up to what I missed. I can understand this, because I tend to go too fast when explaining things to others. That's what happened with that terrific bash scripting course video I found. But I did pick up enough vi/Vim to get me to actually use it.

Got it. I also find the pace of the tutorials the biggest issue. Sometimes they're too slow, other times they're going way too fast. Finding one that moves at just the right pace is tricky.

I'm going to look! Now that you mention it, sometimes they are just right. I appreciate your advice, btw. And you in general.
