    back when i was first learning #nixlang everybody online told me it was basically "JSON but with functions" and now that i'm taking a programming paradigms class and we've gotten to the functional programming chapter, i gotta say, that was a really really weird way to spell "#Haskell but with about half the features missing"

    i love thinking i'm stupid for not immediately understanding functional programming concepts without being told that's what i'm learning

    #nix #nixos

    @AVincentInSpace as soon as you think more about data and its relations, rather then what gets executed when the chances are rather high you are doing #fp ... My std example to explain FP is a spreadsheet: you enter data alongside with functions as first class citizens - you don't care in which order the cells get evaluated, the spreadsheet does that for you.

    @alios yeah

    I'm just frustrated that people refer to a language that shares most of its syntax with haskell as "like JSON"

    fcol it's like telling a C programmer that Python is like C but with objects

    @AVincentInSpace oh one sideproject here is to generate openbsd configuration files from nix expressions together with apps in the same nix flake for fireing up and shutting down qemus with that, a devshell with all the tooling i need to work in that etc...
