Considering that under Trump, the US is turning into a fascist terror state where opponents of the orange leader are simply shot dead on the street by his private Gestapo, ICE, or persecuted by his terror justice system, I am considering completely disposing of all US hardware and services that I still use to some extent.

In addition to Linux and Pixel with GrapheneOS, I unfortunately still use a few Apple devices such as MacBook Air, iPhone, Watch, and iPad Mini, and of course I also have a Google and Amazon account for some services. And it is precisely these that now need to be carefully deleted or replaced.

This includes the Pixel with GrapheneOS, both of which come from the US, and there's no telling what else the GrapheneOS team will be forced to do by this criminal government. Under fascism, there is no freedom, no privacy!

In the end, all that's left is an old dumb phone from Nokia. Apple, Amazon, and Google must go completely, and they can be replaced. It's purely for convenience that I haven't completely eliminated them yet. The planned Framework laptop is also canceled. Fedora/RHEL must be replaced by European Linux solutions. Signal, as a US service, also falls under the Cloud Act and is no longer acceptable.

I have a lot of planning and work ahead of me now...

@joevan @unixviking GrapheneOS is not based in the US and never has been. It was started in Canada back in 2014 and our main infrastructure is still in Canada. Our non-profit for funding and protecting the open source project was created in Canada too.

There aren't any reasonably secure devices which aren't heavily using components from American companies including Qualcomm so it's not clear what people expect to do about that unless you want to move to nearly fully Chinese devices.

@unixviking like discussed with @linuzifer in LNP, there must not be a definite cut and deleting everything, but a step by step changing, or parallel use…

@danielpree @linuzifer I have been using these services and manufacturers for a long time, but only in parallel and occasionally. My main systems and services have been open source solutions for years. Apple products, for example, are more of a gimmick, a technical curiosity, or useful for monitoring my heart condition. Google, because basically everyone has an account there, even if, like me, it's only for YouTube (where I used to regularly post videos about Linux and such until two years ago). Amazon, because it's convenient to order a few everyday items there that you can't find in local stores. And I admit to watching the occasional series on Prime Video. But now it all has to go!
The only thing that will hurt is giving up a de-Googled smartphone with GrapheneOS, because of the calendar function and synchronization with my other computers when I'm on the go. I guess that means a return to the good old pocket calendar.

@D22 Okay, I just checked: it's true. GrapheneOS Foundation in Toronto. But isn't Daniel Micay American? Wasn't that a US-based project with CopperheadOS and then Graphene? According to Wikipedia, the current foundation was only established in Toronto in March 2023. What and where was it before that? I have a vague memory of it somewhere in the back of my mind, which is why I reacted that way.

    @unixviking @D22

    > But isn't Daniel Micay American?

    No, he's Canadian.

    > Wasn't that a US-based project with CopperheadOS and then Graphene?

No. It was never US-based project. Not clear how you're coming up with this.

Please remove the inaccurate information about GrapheneOS from your top-level post.

@GrapheneOS @D22 I have deleted my incorrect statement about GrapheneOS being based in the US from the original post. I apologize for this statement; I was REALLY convinced that Mr. Micay was American and that GrapheneOS was a US project. Unfortunately, I can no longer tell you the source of this information because I simply don't remember it. It was too many years ago. I will also clarify my misunderstanding in a separate post!

@unixviking I’m less concerned with US-based companies that release software as opensource since the software *could* (and probably would) be forked.

I think the most pressing issue at the moment is payment services. Mastercard & VISA are US-based & subject to the whims of the mad tyrant.

SE Asian countries have A2A alternatives & Wero has something similar for Europe but roll-out needs to be massively accelerated & also expanded to non-EU countries.

@unixviking It makes sense to replace the stuff, material or none, that actively supports US. But ditching all of the things you already paid for and isen't actively supporting the US, only hurts you. Where you land on Apple stuff for instance is something you need to mete out for your self.

As for subscriptions to various US services I agree with you.

Please edit that out of the post and include a correction instead.

Aside from that, it's not clear which hardware you think could be used which avoids the US for the core components. Qualcomm is American and the SoC is the most important component.
