I saw a post today wondering why academics have such a knee-jerk reaction of suspicion and revulsion towards AI

Saw a lot of AI people chiming in reasoning everything from jealousy to curmudgeony

    May I present my reasons:

Billboards in San Francisco are so disturbing.

There was one a couple years back that read something like: “One app to rule them all”.

It’s as if they read LotR and identified with the villain?

Similar feels for the billboard about some millionaire dating app/site.

Or the one about financing your second home (while on any given night there are purportedly around 30,000 homeless in the SF Bay Area alone [and I’m among such disenfranchised individuals]).

I mean, maybe those billboards are on the money and the evil villains love SF?

But I know a lot more people in this area who sincerely wish this place weren’t the land of haves and have nots.

@dev you mean you actually _like_ other humans, and possibly even interacting with them?? Next you’ll tell me you actually like to do so _in person_!!

@dev Back in the early 10’s I briefly worked for a Valley startup that was trying to automate restaurant ordering (think approximately “iPads on tables,” only right before the iPad was announced).

I very quickly realized two things:

    1) We were automating the work of single mothers who were already working for sub-minimum wage plus tips; and,

    2) Most of the people who went to restaurants, myself included, really wanted to talk to them, even for just a little bit.

@dev Needless to say I left that startup fairly quickly, it never went anywhere, and now whenever I sit down at a restaurant that has a QR code menu I still order with the human staff if at all possible (assuming I even notice the QR code, which usually i don’t)

@dev Also needless to say they raised a bunch of money from the usual suspects despite never delivering anything of value.

@dev also beyond some of the insane advertising, a lot of the AI hype isn't grounded in clear academic reasoning around "AGI" and stuff like that. It's all manufactured by VCs and business folks (imo). And many of the AI products aren't meant to be a quality piece of technology or a system meant to last for years, rather just something that can turn a quick buck....
