I now understand the idea of Schrödingers' cat was malicious, namely a cat is a conscious being, so if the quantum effect via radioactive decay kills the cat by breaking the cyanide vial (or not), the cat would be the observer and cause the collapse of the wave function. There would be no contradicting dual state of life/death.
