is there a way to make mastodon open images in the browser (e.g. in a separate tab) when they're clicked on, instead of opening them with javascript inside the page?
something like a userscript, maybe?

"Target Linux APIs exclusively, ignore everything else existing" allowed exerting power over a large ecosystem. It is hard to get people to believe in things if their employer benefits from them not believing in them.
But honestly this is a bit of a trap, because once you start thinking this way, you're writing POSIX compliant C89 code that can run on a Motorola 68000 and be compiled with PCC. And inventing stuff like rump kernels.
But maybe that's fine. #netbsd
misogyny, whatever else. Not going to throw accusations around because it's been 10+ years and I don't remember any more.
After a while I found an idea that the real problem with tech wasn't proprietary software, it's walled gardens (non-standard proprietary protocols) built around surveillance. Use of market power to force adoption (FOSS isn't immune, c.f. RedHat/Lennart). And the solution is standards. Portability. Stuff like ActivityPub, really, but before that.
At best you can know how the components fit together. How the distro works.
I was an OpenBSD person at first. This was in the days they still shipped a fork of Apache httpd 1.x in base, so pretty ancient by now. The culture was standard techbro "so-called Meritocracy but we don't talk about our real biases" stuff. I met ariane@ (did the Bitrig fork after one of deraadt's tantrums), who told me about the internal culture which I decided didn't fit with my morals.
It was the late 00s and alt OSes were hot due to Vista failing. I was tricked by a fake Adobe Flash download prompt, and a keylogger was installed on my system. It felt violating.
I tried #Linux first. It was good for 6 months. After following my distribution's official upgrade procedure, I was left with an unusable system. I quickly realized that this was a mass of unrelated components, and I'm not expected to understand how they all work. I'm not clever enough.
Given there's been a lot of improvements to the Log File System in #NetBSD -current, here's how you can install a system to boot to an LFS root:
* Download -current, e.g. https://nycdn.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD-daily/HEAD/latest/images/NetBSD-11.99.8-amd64-dvd.iso
* Boot the installer and follow the steps as usual
* When it shows you the final partition layout, use the arrow keys up to the partition displaying "FFSv2ea". Press return.
* Modify its "type" to "4.4LFS", scroll down and select "OK".
* Finish the installation and reboot. Pretty easy, right?
I feel like I'm being frequently misunderstood and should avoid interneting for a while.
After some poking from users on here that they were having problems with their netbooks, I managed to get #PaleMoon working on an i586-class embedded CPU without SSE.
By the way, the 500MHz Geode feels significantly slower than the 400MHz UltraSPARC II which I usually use for testing. Megahertz myth, innit. #NetBSD
There is something very comfy about my computers that use Compact Flash cards as their main storage. I can easily swap out the disk at any time, put it in an adapter, recover files, and it's a much less "easily lost" form factor than a SD card.
I wish CFExpress caught on over M.2 as the NVMe storage standard.
Apparently the React web framework includes an exception block where the default handler removes the root document element, i.e. blanks the web page if anything goes wrong.
Really helpful to anyone using an even slightly uncommon web browser setup.
finally, a good use case for AI

* alix3d3 (i586) - it finds out what uses SSE2 when it shouldn't
* er4 (evbmips64n64eb) - it finds out when things hardcode a list of supported archs
* mac mini (powerpc; usually runs darwin) - it finds out when things don't specify a c/c++ lang std
* olimex a64 (aarch64) - it finds out when the arm drivers get too piney.
* banana pi (earmv7hfeb) - ugh.
* blade 150 (sparc64, bottom) - it finds out EVERYTHING.
100% not running 24/7.
so many projects being overwhelmed by bogus pull requests is making netbsd's "unorthodox" choice of mercurial + email bug tracker look more reasonable
at the moment we only get bogus Summer of Code applications :-)

First time that someone on eBay has refused to sell me a computer because they looked for it and couldn't find it.
Reading @landley write about computing history is an utter joy. I think he might be happier if he was a BSD person, though. 🙃 https://landley.net/notes-2010.html#19-07-2010
Why does medium need 60 scripts to render some text? What is it doing?
