If you ever needed an excuse to talk to people, today is a great day to personally tell anyone with a PHP website about the PHP vuln.

Because I don't think I've seen any mainstream reporting on it so far. I'm sure it'll become "breaking news" when shit starts breaking and getting broken into.

I've talked to more people today than I had all month. For most of them I even had a good reason and was putting it off!

Edit: just to make the cause for alarm clearer, this new vulnerability affects all versions released in the last 20? years. Which means it will disproportionately affect small businesses with no dedicated IT staff.

And even personal websites with nothing of value on them can still be weaponized for botnets and phishing attacks and consequently taken down (likely for good).

So not only will this break a large chunk of the Internet, it'll be the chunk that will hurt the worst.

Me trying to make CD's cool again: "oh, yeah, I've got that on foil"

Never thought I'd die fighting side by side with Nicolas Cage.

And I still don't, that seems like an oddly specific and unlikely scenario. Why did I even bring it up.

“hi”

… *typing for 5 minutes*

I refuse to consider any "AI" shit from JetBrains seriously while the fucking thing keeps auto-importing things from the wrong package after me manually picking the correct thing ten times in a row in the span of the last hour.

God, how I long for a working IDE. Borland got it right 25 years ago and it's been mostly downhill from there.

And even more brazenly, @stecks – we've never interacted, but i have seen you on Only Connect, and i'm not implying that gives me permission to ask you personally for a boost, but!

@futurebird Mrs. Ant Lady, I dare bother you for I'm guessing you might know someone who might be willing to consider the above.

If anyone is curious, some more detail.

The current overarching self-imposed task of reinventing things I know diddly squat about (not the first or last one) is a printer color profile. Using Oklab as a PCS and allowing for more wiggle room than ICCv2.

Obviously, the mapping between Oklab and CMYK is non-uniform and one is a dimension bigger than the other.

I tried reading ArgyllCMS code and didn't understand a thing, not sure if it's because of lack of knowledge or because complex C code just tends to be unreadable.

Either way what I have right now already beats the output of Argyll, so I know it's not entirely a fool's errand. Especially surprising given that I keep finding dumbest mistakes in my calculations and logic ("what do you mean I forgot to ^2 the coordinates in the euclidean distance and it still works?")

This is not a jab at Argyll, we've been relying on it for years now, plus I'm not constrained by an ancient PCS and even being paid (begrudgingly, I feel, but it's a nice break from forms and buttons). And yes I did even get the client to send some money to Argyll dev. Not without having to explain how FOSS works and how badly everything is fucked right now.

Did that #FediGig hashtag ever take off?

Lately there's been a lot of math in my work and there's not a lot of math in my brain. I think I would be willing to pay someone an hourly rate to answer math questions for me (and bill it to my client, ofc).

The last time I tried this with a different topic it worked wonderfully, and a 2 hour chat with @gsuberland saved me days of learning things I would never need again.

Here's a sample of things I had to figure out (with varying degrees of success) in the last few weeks that I expect are obvious to someone in the domain and/or properly educated:

• Fitting a set of functions to map between between non-uniform 3D and 4D spaces based on a small number of unreliable readings.
• Building a lookup table from the said set of functions/readings, which are also non-uniformly distributed, which skews the basic 1D arithmetic mean quite badly.
• Picking a good but fast and adjustable window function to hopefully help with that a little bit.
• Intersecting lines with convex hulls and a bunch of other 3D/4D geometry, linear algebra, trigonometry and whatnot.

All this stuff is magic to me and I do feel really happy when I finally figure out for myself what a "plane normal" or a "unit vector" is and why "dot product" is a useful measure of anything , but there's only so much time I'm willing to spend speedrunning what I supposedly was to learn 20 years ago, if the common lore about what programmers are good at is to be believed.

So basically I'm looking for a math/statistics/CS tutor but the exam is whatever I happen to be working on today and there's no curriculum. Text or voice is good.

If you respond with a suggestion to talk to a chatbot, or, worse, an "answer" from that chatbot, you might actually become the first non-troll person I've blocked on here.

If I had the knowledge or energy to "double-check the answers", I wouldn't be bloody asking.

pls boost :boost_requested:

@jamey @ricci years ago, @irene found herself in a meeting with the National Science Board where everyone had to wait because Vint Cerf couldn't get his internet to work

The supply chain is so bad right now that the only RAM I could find came as a DIY kit.

realized that i don't think i ever saw my phd advisor use a single capital letter in email, and i can only aspire to that level of seniority

If you're gonna followspam, at least own it. Follow 100K people. Do you think if you try to keep that ratio no one can tell what you're doing? Especially if you follow and unfollow the same people every month.

Ok yeah, that actually works pretty well. Now make that shit opt-in again (or at least proactively fucking ask before assuming consent or something?) and it might have a future.

I kinda liked (and used!) #TagsPub when it was #OptIn tbh but the #notifications are annoying either way... what if I silence the instance?

inside you are two golden egg factory

@secretasianman they read the story of the golden goose, and were like, “ah I get the moral of the story, it is bad they didn’t have market speculation on the value of the goose “
