One got a little scorched on one edge so we’ll keep that one and give Ernie the nice-looking one.

I’m making pie for my friend’s birthday and because I want pie.

Two in a row!

I am the Halloween Grinch.

I have no interest in cosplay. I hate horror movies. There's no such thing as ghosts, and spooky shit is just people assigning some kind of relevance to their vague and baseless feelings. I don't really like "cute kids" being around. Goths tend to listen to way too much dance music. I love candy of course but mostly better candy than that.

I loved trick or treat when I was a child but I'm no longer a child. And there are countless things that other people like that I don't and that's fine. There's all of major league sports! And camping! It's fine for people to like things I don't, but the way adults in the US have gotten about Halloween for all of October is offputting. I am trying not to care but they're trying me.

I have eaten the smaller serving of leftovers for lunch so that I can try the cake.

Oh look. It's everything.

Cropped so you can’t see how clean my stove isn’t.

We went to a different supermarket than usual and I had a plan but they had Belgian endive, which I love anyway but I JUST this weekend learned that there’s a traditional dish in which they’re wrapped in ham and baked under a comté sauce and the plan changed.

I thought that if I rested a lot for the first part of the day I'd be fine to go out in the evening.

That was … ambitious.

Shingles itself is really quite bad. I was … *surprised* by how much it hurts, although it made sense when I realized that the infected cells driving the reaction and inflammation are precisely the neurons responsible for reporting pain signals to your central nervous system.

Shongles shit: check. (Well, half check.)

Also got my new covid booster (a fine local product), and flu shot earlier.

I am very protected.

Shoutout to that mutual who posts just the rare short thought and they're all bangers.

I love my fellow wordy bitches, don't get me wrong, you beguile my days, just right now I'm appreciating the social media ninjas.

Blessings be upon @Fabirucho who posted a picture of a meal including rice with corn kernels cooked in it. I saw that and thought WAIT HOT DAMN it is fresh corn season and buttered rice is DELICIOUS and buttered corn is DELICIOUS and we have all this incredible butter.

So tonight we had sort of a lemon-pepper-tarragon roast pork and broccoli situation, with heavily buttered rice with fresh corn. IT WAS SO FUCKING GOOD.

Out of curiosity, I raised the injected arm and noticed some soreness, and thought, huh. Then I remembered that I'm 57 and raised the OTHER arm. Yep.

P.s.: I just went back and checked and sure enough I have posted this every year since joining mastodon.

Got my flu shot today and a couple hours in there's no soreness whatsoever. I knock on wood as I type it.

COVID has to wait for me to make an actual appointment and I'll probably get the first Shingrix dose at the same time so I want to do it maybe on a Friday when I have a chill day available the next day, should I need it. But those are coming when I can make it happen. Flu is both required (I work for a hospital) and trivial to get. (ibid.)

One thinks of basbousa and tres leches, but with a kind of Mitteleuropa flavor profile.

Hmmm. What if I made a kind of tough, dry, and undersweetened poppyseed yogurt cake, then poured a warmed mixture of cream and honey over it right as it came out of the oven?

EVERYBODY CONGRATULATE BILLY HE IS SO AWESOME THAT HE RAPIDLY GOT A NEW JOB *IN* *THIS* *ECONOMY*!!!!!

I've probably said this before but my problem with #NationalCoffeeDay (and it is a serious one) is the implication that there are days that are NOT #NationalCoffeeDay.
