*I've also read this remarkable book, and yes, the exciting and provocative topics that technologists talk about, those are not the vast bulk of commonplace and even antique things that people actually use.
Be self-reliant, but also still need the people in your life. You can do both, and life's better that way.
Random blog post inspired by someone else's random blog post. Mostly I just love succinct data structures and continue to want the world to know about them. :-)

I’d add: it’s okay to do a little of both. Excuses to engage with AH* are lovely, and sometimes AI is useful.

unironically, unashamedly do this. call your friends, ask them for help. and when they say “wait did you ask me just to replace your AI” say yes. say you’ll owe them one but you appreciate them so much more than AI. and show up for them, too.
do not opt out of friendships because you’re too embarrassed that you used a chatbot for a while

Thanks, friends. Let’s keep swinging.❤️
Some days the feed delivers.
I’m glad California is taking steps in the direction of AI regulation. Baby steps, but still.
(I feel like such a policy nerd, but this whole issue has caused me to recognize the value of these things more than anything else in my lifetime)
I’d really appreciate a holistic framework for what we think needs regulating around AI, why, and by when.
A framework would give industry concrete anchor points to come together and argue in the directions that are needed. The media gets focal points for the kind of research journalism that attracts readers more with curiosity than fear.
For the rest of us, we’d get to think in smaller chunks, become informed, and pursue concrete action aligned with our individual and collective interests.

I don’t know if I fully agree with the active intent implied in this premise.
I *do* agree that as a society we get over focused on the existential threat and the long term concern, which usually lack immediate actions available to the average human other than panic and protest general things.
It also adds to the load of existential dread and unspecified anxiety we all carry, which is decidedly unhelpful. 1/3
Very excited — due to a flight delay, I’ll be in the air for the peak of the lunar eclipse tonight, ~9p Pacific.

"I will never forgive the people who decided to migrate university mail servers to Outlook. This was both incompetence and malice on a terrifying level because there were enough warnings and opposition from very competent people at the time. Yet they decided to destroy one of the university’s core infrastructures and historical foundations"
