So I tried Airplay for the first time (streaming video with iPad, airplay to tv), and the resolution looks like VHS. Is that normal?

How I long for the days when I thought the tagline "It can’t be that stupid, you must be prompting it wrong" was funny hyperbole
(Turns out to be a very straightforward paraphrase of *so* many AI adopters)

1 only self check out, no open lines with cashiers
2 the self checkout machine won't scan
3 the self checkout helper is too busy helping others to help right away
4 the self checkout helper can't get the scanner to work either so we switch to a different self checkout machine
5 typing in the product number (SKU?) doesn't work either
6 when the helper finally brings the product up (somehow she knew to try typing the first three letters only, and scanning the many results; typing in the first four letters -> 0 results for some reason), it's listed at a higher price
What are the odds that 1/3 random items has a higher-than-advertised price?
7 I stopped by the customer service desk to try and tell someone, A, very good helper, B, very bad systems - no one available at the CS desk
8 I tried to send feedback through their website, but it's an endless loop between the "contact us" page and the "send feedback" page

WTF would I ever come back here?

I would really love to hear from #TechServices / #AccessServices / #ILL experts about why this might be more difficult than it sounds. And from #OA experts about whether it's been tried before.

Doesn't a lot of ILL go through OCLC as a sort of clearinghouse, or NLM for medical libraries? Maybe the clearinghouse could aggregate things.

I personally don't see a privacy issue -- we aren't talking about who the library users are, just how many of them wanted to read the document

What if... libraries shared their ILL stats

and aggregated them

and every year, we sent to the corresponding author an automated report:

- X library patrons sought your paper via ILL. Presumably many more would-be readers gave up because of the paywall.

- Your publisher's self-archiving policy is ________. If you archive the accepted manuscript in your IR / through ShareYourPaper, more interested readers will actually be able to get at your work.

I long to know the answer to that question :)

TIL that FORRT has a portal listing open research games :) :) :) :) :) :)

Tech people of Fedi -- will my laptop battery last longer if I restart the computer more frequently?

New from #SPARC (@sparc): "For the first time, researchers can count the investment that goes into a research article before a publisher ever sees it, and it shows who really pays for knowledge: the public. Set against independent estimates of publishing costs, more than 95% of the total investment in a published article is typically made by the public before submission to a publisher."

Next time I am getting a tyvek jumpsuit

Well... I didn't get poison ivy last week. But I clearly got something wrong cleaning up, since I'm still getting new tiny patches now. No idea what is contaminated with urushiol and what isn't.

Trying to persuade myself to tune in at 4 AM tomorrow for a talk on "healthy information habits, the challenges of information overload, the influence of digital platforms and organisational environments on information use, and the role of information systems and knowledge organisation in creating healthier, more supportive information environments"

I approve of this method of proving humanity. Much better than asking me to tick all the boxes containing buses or whatever.

Let the record show that I was informed just now that the provider "accepted" my "amendment request" to correct a factual error in the note generated by an AI ambient listening product (and theoretically read, edited, and approved by the provider).

Hi @ml - saw this and thought you might be interested
