Widerstand vernetzen, Rechenzentren verhindern!

Spread the word!

Cottbus Umweltgruppe focuses on the mining projects in Lusatia. The discussion covers, among other things, how struggles for water justice are taking shape locally in Lusatia and what challenges exist in organising these efforts. We also discuss how local water scarcity is increasingly having a supra-regional impact and how groups can connect their protests across regions and coordinate local struggles over resource distribution.

Initiative Ökologie is examining the fundamentals and impacts of the chip factories around Dresden, Europe’s largest chip manufacturing hub. The discussion centres, among other things, on linking resistance against data centres with that against chip factories. A counter-conference or other forms of intervention are conceivable to coincide with the chip manufacturers’ conference (Industry Strategy Symposium Europe 2027) that takes place in Dresden in March 2027.

Our recap from the first event: @tarakiyee spoke about the ways in which open-source software, too, has extractivist effects on numerous levels. Even though software code is freely available, it often relies on unpaid labour. Furthermore, using it requires hardware, which in turn consumes resources in a way that is based on environmental destruction and mostly neo-colonial exploitation.
The three organising groups discussed ways to take action:

See you tomorrow in Berlin! (note the house number is 23/24, not 24/25, but you cannot miss it when you look for 24 anyway)
And we have some new announcements to make:
If you cannot wait until the 30, you can find out more about the link between FLOSS and global extractivism. @tarakiyee wrote for @APC: https://giswatch.org/en/floss-freelibre-open-source-software-open-source-technology/funding-floss-power-governance-and
"Whether FLOSS can deliver on its transformative promise at all, or whether that promise turns out to be an empty husk that only serves to legitimatise continued extraction, remains to be seen. The answer depends not on the goodwill of those who benefit from the status quo, but rather on the organising power of those who do not."
3/3
We look forward to seeing you there!
You can also already save the date for the second event on November 7 (all-day) with citizen initiatives and an input from @aufstaendederallmende
There will be a lot of action on that weekend, with a Europe-wide push against the current data centre agenda and also local ways of getting involved, check out the German Tag der offenen Rechenzentren on 6 November: https://tdorz.de/ and stay tuned!
2/3
Nodes of Resistance starting soon! 30 September, 6:30pm at Tempelhofer Ufer 23/24
Kicking off with: Is there technology without extractivism? @tarakiyee will provide an input and we will break into smaller groups to hear from and exchange ideas with groups involved in fighting extractivism on the ground: chip factories in Dresden, copper mines in Eastern Germany and cobalt mines in Congo. What are strategies to reduce or radically rethink Big Tech’s destructive footprint on our world?
1/3
We will kick off on 30 September with a session on “Is there Technology without Extractivism?” @tarakiyee will talk about ”What the Machine is Made Of“, walking us through the layers of the technological stack. We will discuss how to confront the intensified wave of extractivism across the world, from Peru to Eastern Germany. What are strategies to reduce or radically rethink Big Tech’s destructive footprint? We will then delve into opportunities for organising with groups fighting extractivism.
Let’s organise and resist against Big Tech ✊
Join us at Nodes of Resistance, an event series in Berlin organised by @structural_integrity and @capulcu co-hosted with @digiges, @Datenpunks and AiAiSi.
We will open the room to continue debates that started at the #cablesofresistance conference and contribute to a movement as broad and unpredictable as it can be to reflect the diversity of the society that is affected by the Big Tech’s destruction.
