My children are very good at taking turns. They even take turns being sick. So I get to have one child with manic energy, and one child barfing everywhere. Twice!

There is no one on gods green earth more invigorated than a toddler who barfed 5 minutes ago

The number of times on mom boards a woman comes to the group asking what to do about her abusive husband …

But we all know, if she leaves him, he will get 50% custody and the children she’s trying to protect will be in his exclusive “care” without her ability to shield them. It is almost impossible to get any different arrangement.

I wish these stories were more well understood by women who haven’t had kids yet. I’m too tired to even wish these men were better.

Ok is anyone on here into the #classics or #hellenism? Cause what is the deal with Achilles? Like, he seems to operate in a totally different social context from everyone else.
1. He’s the only man who expresses any sense of like “why would I fight in this war? My life has value”
2. When he does fight he’s fucking bonkers
3. Then he does these games where he resolves all these conflicts peacefully, makes sure everyone feels valued, which doesn’t seem like a thing anyone else sees as worth doing

Or am I misreading? Totally possible. But he seems like an enigmatic figure to me, not just an angry pouting rage-aholic.

Also if there are good scholarly discussions of him as a character I would love a source or two!

We have finished the Iliad. We made it folks.

What a strange book that despite not being particularly enjoyable I do feel like I could talk about for weeks and weeks.

Me: I want to throw my phone in the ocean, but then I’d be lost all the time

Them: people got around just fine before smartphones, you weren’t lost all the time before you got your first smartphone

Me: YES. THE FUCK. I WAS.

There is so much incredibly careful data work in agriculture, meteorology, a million other fields that honestly blows tech data work out of the water

How many times must I learn the lesson that when someone says “just show me the numbers you have, I totally understand they’re not final!” They are LYING and will lose their mind when “the numbers” change.

It is becoming increasingly clear that my greatest asset at work is how dumb I am willing to be

This is…unsettling

In #goodnews, my and @dan’s OSDI 2014 paper, Arrakis, has won the test of time award at SOSP! If you want to read a “retro” paper, it is available here (open-access) from USENIX: https://www.usenix.org/system/files/conference/osdi14/osdi14-paper-peter_simon.pdf

Yesterday my newly minted kindergartener met me on the stairs as I was coming home, holding a paper on which he had written “ROM”. He asked me what it said. Knowing full well it was a trap but seeing no way out, I said “rom?” He melted down in rage and frustration, having thought he had successfully written “room”.

Today he met me with the word “DOR” which I had to tell him wasn’t a real word but would be pronounced…”door”

He is very mad at English and honestly so am I.

Some days i love my curls. And some days i look like sideshow bob. We’ve landed on the unfortunate side of the ledger today.

Question from my 5yo:

Would you rather have

I love my children more than life itself

I am hiding from my children and if they find me I will be devastated

We contain multitudes

I don’t know if this is just confirmation bias but good LORD everything seems so buggy right now

Doing the solar thing, finally

I'm looking to hire a project manager!

I'm working on a project with materials scientists and physicists to build stacked quantum heterostructures, which have potential interesting properties as semiconductors, etc. It's a crazy process that involves crystal growers, driving microscopes with an Xbox controller, a adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators, and exfoliation with scotch tape. We need a project manager to help us ... well, manage the project.

Dear political canvassers. If you care at all about your candidate or issue, you need to really, really try not to wake up any babies. Cause the rage you will inspire truly has no peer.

3yo, from the other room: maaaahhhm! Wanna see my jump?

…Honest answer?

3yo: I promise it is safe!

Oop time to get up and see what this kid is attempting

Dear drivers of San Francisco. I know it annoys you that I stopped for that pedestrian in the crosswalk. You’re just going to have to get over it and take a deep calming breath.
