Finished watching Reacher S4. Enjoyed it, it's more of the same, but can see why some people are grumbling: Reacher got hurt a lot more, some "too convenient" happenings, spotted one inconsistency between scenes. Not offputting for me yet though, still happy to switch brain off.
Funny Teams automated captions mistake in this week's postgraduate maths seminar:
"So we start with a positive Omega naughty solving our ode"
Yesterday's minor win: I was going to get a packaged spice mix from the supermarket because I was thinking of making chicken steaks for meal prep, then on a whim I read the ingredients and realised I had them all at home already 🥳
You'd think after so much maths teaching I'd be comfortable teaching non-maths stuff that's "basic knowledge" to me but is probably completely new to others, but nooooooo my anxieties are flaring up again /flails
Today I kept trying to find this particular rendition of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 (~10min) to listen to. It's in baroque style, where the tuning (A = 415Hz) is lower than standard (A = 440Hz), which gives a very different yet mature feel.
Watched the final episode of The Pitt S2. Many tears and feelings, a lot resonated with me.
I don't struggle with passive suicidal ideation much these days (thanks to my current environment), but they got a lot of things right in its portrayal compared to my experience.
Met a guy last week who's into photography because he can't visualise stuff in his head. After his grandparents passed away he realised his lack of visual memory meant he couldn't recall their faces, so he saw photography as a means to consciously capture those moments 🥺
Just watched "Thursday Murder Club" (movie) on Netflix, it's solid, charming and solidly written. A good watch for a good chuckle.
My only wish is that it had a bit more whimsy. Everything feels a little too carefully crafted and deliberate.
Was wondering about dyslexia in e.g. Chinese, Japanese, where they use characters instead of English script to write. Turns out it does exist, but because language processing for e.g. English vs Chinese is different (via brain scans), dyslexia in one doesn't imply the other.
I wish I hadn't looked up how to hand-make rugs (blame Instagram ads) because now I want to make one in the shape of the aperiodic hat tile but I know there'll be issues with the square/grid mesh and it not quite being correct on various diagonal slants/corners 💢
Late to the party, but finally watched "Hidden Figures" (2016), the movie about three pioneering black women at NASA. Obviously, Katherine Johnson the mathematician was most relevant to me.
I'm glad that something now exists in popular media form to tell their stories 😊
I'm trying to figure out a lace crochet pattern for the aperiodic hat with Penrose kite fractals inside it and I just realised I'm probably solving some kind of edge-covering graph theory problem 😒
Couple of days ago I learnt about a UK list of 'endangered crafts' and I can't say I'm surprised the making of various musical instruments on there, I'd been wondering about availability of luthiers for my cello for a while.

I woke up this morning to realise my hearing aid didn't charge fully because I didn't put it into the charger properly.
But my replacement mold+receiver finally arrived in the mail so my two-month suffering substandard hearing is finally fixed and I can play cello again, YAY!
Today was apparently World Hearing Day so letting y'all know that I'm deaf in my right ear, moderate-severe loss in the left ear, and am always happy to answer questions or have conversations. Got a (grand)parent who's going deaf but won't get hearing aids? I'll talk to them! 😁 Hearing loss in old age is also linked to dementia and reduced quality of life, so getting them to hear properly will keep the brain functioning and happy!
In Matilda, Ms. Honey said she usually has a big lunch so that she can forego dinner. As a child back then I never understood how that worked.
It finally struck me as I finished meal prepping my lunches that are undoubtedly going to be such lunches 😅 Yay metabolism /j
New crochet project/experiment, heh heh heh...
Spotted this sign at a local cafe. Now this is my kind of ominous humour 😁
Yoohoo, maths PhD position where I am! Intersection of complex analysis and probability, excellent team, and because you'll be in my vicinity you'll be in good hands 🙃

Did not expect to see a random dragonfly chilling on the ground this morning 😶
