Evacuating my office after receiving an email with suspicious whitespace

@deviantollam I finally have an elevator question for you. Really three questions.

Why does Elevator Communications Failure get such prominent placement devoted to it? What is this flashing and beeping trying to communicate to whom? And why does it have no effect on the elevator operation regardless? (Which might explain why the staff has completely tuned it out. I’d lose my mind if it had to sit next to that constant alarm.)

New bop drop. Skip if morally opposed to people with no talent using technology to entertain themselves at immense cost to the planet and humanity’s collective soul.

The best way to deploy enterprise software is don’t.

Thank you. Additional lessons are available to Patreon supporters (L6+).

That which can be explained by stupidity or malice is probably both. I'm calling this Mia's Razor, after the por qué no los dos girl.

I found a repeatable crashing bug on my toaster.

I have half a degree in computer touching and I can’t figure out how to get any of the office kitchen appliances to produce hot water.

I did a think over the weekend and I don't know how to feel about it. My router configuration is now managed in Terraform.

@atpfm Mastodon makes it hard to see if this has already been reported 1000 times, but… you do know https://atp.fm/store disconcertingly jumps up and down when viewed on an iPhone?

Don't forget to dial *70 so your Internet connection doesn't get interrupted.

Fumbled my two day old phone onto the asphalt trying to take a picture of a pickle bench with one hand (the other was holding a bag of pickles). Scratched and dented two corners.

I guess I got that out of the way early.

On occasion I get myself wrapped around the axle, as it were, and end up venting my frustration in ways I regret. It's not a good look, but I'm leaving it there as a reminder to myself to try to be kinder.

Captain, I’m givin’ ‘er all the prompts she’s got!

#vibecoding for real: I asked Cline to make a field validation change along with a test for it. After a few dollars and a rainforest burned down, I got a bright green summary of its success, shiny new code, and 16 tests. Vibe coders would yeet this into Git and publish a LinkedIn blog about how transformative #AI is.

I decided to check by removing the validation, and the tests still passed. Because they didn't actually test the code. We are headed for epic-scale industrial disasters.

I like the AI autocompletion here. All I typed was <div>.

AI Answer Syndrome, which is a variant of Male Answer Syndrome, is the inability of AI bots to say "I don't know" or "that's not possible". All questions will be confidently answered, even if the answer has to be made up. In the case of programming questions, this usually manifests as inventing a convenient API that would do exactly what the requester needs.. if only it weren't completely fictional.

Here's my take on what I've been calling Peak Information. We all experienced this straight-out-of-scifi transformation: in the blink of an eye we went from having to go to the library to dig stuff up in dusty outdated books, to being able to ask any question into the air and have it instantly answered. Companies like Google built their missions around (and profited from) improving access to information.

For those of us who suffered from naive optimism, it wasn't unusual to assume this would continue to accelerate into some kind of singularity where our children's children would evolve into glowing entities of pure knowledge. In reality, it all broke down, and in particular, with the creation of AI spew, we have applied a destructive and unrecoverable lossy filter to the collected knowledge and wisdom of all human creation. We were gifted the ultimate library, and we put a match to it.

Today's #maker project is to try to machine this out of aluminum. This may or may not be related to my previous toot about cleaning aerators. I have no idea what I'm doing, so it'll be fun.

#brandnewsentence I just heard on YouTube: “I’m still learning about Green Day.”
