So let met get that straight: paying a wealth tax is impossible (“billionaires have no liquidity”, “it would be taxing unrealized gains”, “their wealth is virtual”) but paying half a billion to influence elections is possible. Did I understand well?
As others have pointed out, there could be an influx of newcomers to the #Fediverse from #Brazil who are tired of #Meta 's latest shenanigans while meddling with politics.
If you see them, be friendly and welcoming, and under no circumstances start with "You are using the Fediverse wrong!"
I mean it. We have a serious "Reply Guy" problem around here, and we've already lost our big chance with Black Twitter. Let's not screw _this_ opportunity up, okay?
I especially like this part… https://mastodon.rfc1925.org/@ondrej/117488122618264581
If all the governments shutting down their servers for a PHP vulnerability, all the hosting companies and enterprises terrified by the vuln, would give $100k, heck only $50k a year to the PHP Foundation, things could look very differently. Go make your employer sponsor *today* https://thephp.foundation/sponsor/ #php #phpc @thephpf
(Me, whispering: Maybe the reason PHP is everywhere and in everything is that ease of use, ease of modification and ease of deployment are actually good things and making easy, fun things safe is way, way more important to real world practices and uptake than trying to graft ease of use and fun onto guarantees of safety that computing has never been willing, much less able, to really guarantee anyway.)
Of course it'd be better to have vulnerability in PHP at all, but I'm deeply moved by today's events:
1) The absolute professionalism of everyone involved from @thephpf. Thank you!
2) The number & size of sites went off-line at 2PM UTC to patch their servers. PHP totally runs the world!
3) PHP in news reports in press and TV across the globe.
I've seen some disgusting rhetoric from some holier than thou IT people this morning on the #php security issue. None of who actually know what the problem is!
Comments like "swap to an alternative" are NOT helpful. Because moving everything to a different platform is so easy for everyone!
PHP is a good and accessible language that still runs a large chunk of the internet. Still pays my bills.
I can't remember the last major PHP security issue. Must have been at least 10 years now.

Read the story around the security vulnerabilities fixed in PHP today that I wrote up for the PHP Foundation, what an exhausting last week in this process. Glad it's out, hoping you all update ASAP.
A backup that has never been restored is a hope, not a backup.
I have yet to meet the team whose restore worked the first time it mattered. Ours runs weekly, automated, into a scratch database, verifying the critical tables, because the alternative is discovering your backup strategy's bugs during the incident it existed for.

For years the pitch for single page apps was “it’s faster after the first load”. Its true: LCP drops by about a third when you factor in soft navs.
Google’s Core Web Vitals, which feed into search ranking, now measure soft navigations.
But 7 of the 11 SPAs we looked at still make people wait over 2.5s for the first page.
Hard fact: Most sites should be multi-page HTML page loads. JS apps come with too many compromises!
Most complaints about remote work are solved or were never real. The quick question is a Slack message. The lost osmosis came back with a spatial tool.
What actually sucks: remote collapses celebration, break and work into one rectangle, so shipping something big never lands. And hard conversations and real whiteboard work need a room. I have no fix for the first. For the second, go on-site.
Honest, from running remote teams: https://kore-nordmann.de/blog/remote_first_what_sucks.html
We’ve been talking about this for years.
None of these far-right movements are organic.
perhaps the most universal experience of a professional software engineer is making preparations for failure and having them ignored by management, only to them to find out the hard way
alas, you didn't end up looking smart but made other people feel stupid, so you won't get listened to next time
without a union, a professional body, or legal consequence for negligence, software engineering will continue to go fast, and only examine consequences after the preventable accident
"We can't deliver because of another team," on repeat? Do not blame the teams. That is your own metric talking back. Measure each team on its own output and you have wired reward directly to not helping anyone else. Goodhart's law, plainest form. And you quietly drive out the cross-connectors, who usually understand the business best. Give teams slack. Notice the invisible work out loud.

Here's another thing about LLM's
It drives teams away from collaboration. Why pairing or teaming anyway? We have our own individual agents to pair with, no? A lovely, short-sighted, tunnel vision 🙄
So far, for diversity.
Lack of diversity results in lower-quality products ...
Building a component because the literature has a name for one is cosplay, not architecture.
Data mesh's sidecar is a useful *word*: it names why security, audit, and quality recur together on every data product. In most real deployments it exists only on the slide deck. That's where it belongs.
The test: made physical, does it make anyone's work easier this quarter? https://kore-nordmann.de/blog/the-sidecar-that-shouldnt-exist.html
I just want to point out that the MAGANazi party tried the culture war bullshit with Zohran Mamdani. They tried, and it failed.
They tried the socialism thing. He waved it away by leaning harder into workers rights.
They tried the trans thing. He waved it away by leaning harder into trans rights.
They tried the immigration thing. He waved it away by leaning harder into immigrant rights.
The lesson here for Centrist Democrats is simple. You don't fight Nazis by giving up ground to the Nazis. You fight Nazis by leaning harder into the wind and standing up for individual rights.
Don’t be the smug strangers saying “why are you surprised?” Think it and move on. As a written reply on fedi, it makes you sound like a cynical know-it-all and nobody likes to have such people in their replies.
This reminder due to seeing somebody having to ask their readers to stop doing it. This is not the first time I’m seeing it.
I collected some more fedi etiquette on this post:
