Lots of inside baseball in Chrystia Freeland’s new book “Unreliable Boyfriends”.
Here’s a link to a Toronto Star review. (I’ve also copied the article here as it’s behind a paywall. )

Stories are surfacing daily about foreign meddling in our politics. But what really are the penalties for such political interference?
Note particularly subsection (2) below.

From the Foreign Interference and Security of Information Act
—————————————-
Influencing political or governmental process

20.4 (1) Every person commits an indictable offence who, at the direction of, or in association with, a foreign entity, engages in surreptitious or deceptive conduct with the intent to influence a political or governmental process, educational governance, the performance of a duty in relation to such a process or such governance or the exercise of a democratic right in Canada.
Punishment
(2) Every person who commits an offence under subsection (1) is liable to imprisonment for life.

Here’s the Act:

Americans continue to meddle in Canada.

“The report . . . said American government officials had attempted to negotiate tariffs with Quebec directly. The news report also noted how a U.S.-based think tank, the Defense Analyses and Research Corporation, published an essay in February calling for Americans to destabilize the Canadian federation.”

Afore ye scurvy ridden landlubbers get bilge water on ye brigantine’s cordage, know that this be talk like a pirate day. Arrr.
Ye might be wanting to make merry but beware ye don’t contract the gout from the grog or dance the hempen jig and end up in Davey Jones’ locker for all ye troubles.
Ye might be thinking that ye can keep yer scuppers dry an’ avoid the squiffy but the tankards be overflowing t’day and ye could nigh on the sweats afore daybreak if ye take a caulk and don’t tighten yer jib.
