Anyone who sees this: please reply with anything, I reverted a setting change and want to see if it fixed the dropped notification issues.

Update: OK, seems to work, now for anyone else, try liking then replying. Sometimes I'll get a Like notification but no Reply notification. (I promise this isn't farming, obviously this won't reach any Trending timelines)

Just so you know, my ActivityPub server is having an issue where I fail to get notifications from some users, so if you've mentioned me recently and I've ignored you, I probably just didn't see the post. I'll file a bug report.

My first #blogpost , and it's a depressing one 🫠 but I figure you have to be real if you want to eventually find a solution.

As it turns out, #AI is really good at remaking/cloning. Here's #Photocraft , or you could say, "OpenPhotoshop": https://github.com/storytold/photocraft

Got #Firefox installed on #HaikuOS . Awesome!

I disabled emoji reactions (too ripe for abuse in the microblogging world, works very well for chats though IMO). I also enabled strict_public_timelines; while it was nice seeing every conversation everyone I follow was involved in (genuinely surfaces interesting things), I am becoming a busy man as time goes on (and I am here for it) so I need to tone down my social media usage.

Max poll options doubled to 16.

Replies to my posts are no longer automatically purged (if I understood the manpage correctly).

Thanks to the snac author for the perfect ActivityPub implementation for me 🍻 #snac2

I got some custom emoji set up on my tasty #snac :sheik_dab:

I now also have a favicon :thonk: (goodbye Susie :cap_salute:) and I overhauled my config :nervous_sweat: Fun! #selfHosting #customEmoji

Best block I have ever gotten :)

Boycotting #DHH for being racist makes sense to me. But I see some people wanting everyone to boycott #Ladybird due to its usage of "he" in its docs. It's over the top... "he" in English can be gender-neutral (though that is an older way to use "he"), and many people use it that way with no ill intent (including myself, sometimes).

I prefer "they" personally, but the only thing getting upset at Ladybird is going to accomplish is causing unnecessary division in the #OpenSourceCommunity ....

Found a really insightful Reddit post about the #Commodore64Ultimate and why #retrocomputing has such an appeal to many.

Honestly I'd find it hard to imagine why anyone would want one.

To understand the appeal of something like the Ultimate, or TheC64, I think you actually have to live through this whole weird thing where almost inconcievably powerful computers gradually became so commonplace that people often have multiple tiny supercomputers kicking around in drawers in their house while the ability for the user to actually directly harness that power shrank to the point that they're just glorified pocket organisers.

In 1995 our home computer was an Acorn Archimedes and I'd have given anything to get a Windows 95 PC and I wouldn't have believed it if future me showed up trying to swap a Windows 10 laptop for that Archimedes, but man, I would do it if I could.

Humans have a pretty good set of senses for science. 2D vision is great for working with visualizations of data (with the ability to instantly interpret 3D projections!), hearing is analog-in (ever listened for a mechanical problem?), and smell helps you tell materials apart without needing to get a chunk of it as a sample. #science #humans #senses

Well! First time I've had a post mentioned ("webmention"-ed, snac called it!) by a webpage. Interesting to see the social web at work. I still don't really understand how it works, but cool!

#ActivityPub

Oh my goodness, apparently some people have gotten these activating in the 2020s. And this is a 90s phone. https://www.reddit.com/r/vintagemobilephones/comments/1bpe7n9/i_just_got_a_nokia_5190/

I'm gonna charge it up and put my nano SIM in (it sorta fits lol) and see what happens. 👀

#physicalSIM

So I got a #Nokia from a garage sale for $2....

...think it'll activate? Lol

Check it out: development is being done in #GitLab to add #ActivityPub support!

I low-key feel like a #HamRadio operator, when I'm using this #ActivityPub server and chatting with people who-knows-where. So cool.

There are nice things in this "timeline", so let's find opportunities to be grateful!

Sharing a little mod I made to my #C64U !

I wrote a little BASIC program which draws coral, water, and bubbles and changes the VIC's X-scrolling based on the current scanline, to make an aquarium "screensaver".
Since BASIC (and the original #C64 ) are slow, it doesn't work correctly unless I change the processor speed to 40MHz or higher.

I was wondering about how hot the FPGA was getting, so I took the C64U apart and felt the FPGA, and it was almost too hot to touch. I was a little worried about long-term wear on the FPGA if it stayed really hot for a long time, so I got the idea for this mod.

What I did was take a tiny fan (almost the same exact dimensions as the FPGA, actually!) which draws very little current, and plugged it into the motherboard's user port's 5V DC.
I took two paperclips, and bent them so that the small turn in the paperclip could be screwed down by one of the screws holding down the FPGA board, and bent the long turn upwards so that it would go through one of the fan's holes.
Unfortunately, the fan is a bit to the right, so not exactly over the FPGA, but whatever... at least it is aligned in one of the ways (vertically). It is pretty solidly in place, at any rate.

I know this mod isn't necessary, but I like fan noise anyway and would feel more comfortable with the FPGA running cooler. That said, this fan makes more motor noise than air noise, and I might solder in a resistor in-line with the fan cable to get it to chill a bit (or chill less... lol).

While I wish it went into even more detail, I enjoy #Commodore 's spiral-bound manual's level of documentation. It helped me find the right place to connect the fan (you can see "MAX 100mA" in the bottom-left corner of the pic). The C64U really does have a lot of spare connections inside; lots of room to tinker.

Next mod I want to do: do something about that rocker switch! I want a normal power switch which cuts/connects power (maybe a metal toggle switch, by the "H-L" hole?), and buttons (or maybe the existing rocker switch!) to reset the C64 or switch to the C64U hypervisor CPU (however this thing works).
