So, the stick works. I got this far. But during the install, the console actual has a flood of messages every second or so as it reports the unplugging and plugging oh a few USB devices, the ELAN touchscreen amongst them (it's internal, and I guess needs some magic, so it keeps soft unplugging itself?). Makes the install menus very difficult to read and the preamble scrolls off. I did get an install, I think. But now it seems stuck at the memory test when installing from the harddrive. Hmm.

Had an awesome birthday weekend with the amazing @shieladixon making a fantastically #ZXSpectrum themed birthday cake. With sparklers!

@drj things that respond to ^T are blessed.. nmap, looking at you

i have a lot of anger surrounding tech, a thing i used to love with all my heart

*sees a TUI for NetBSD installer* I can fix this! This could be CUA compliant!

Wait does ^T send SIGINFO to the process in NetBSD? If it does, that is a thing to be celebrated (dd and similar give status reports on ^T)

My NetBSD journey has me using pliers, and a small file, to bend this USB stick back into shape. It's 64GB. I think it was okay back in the day (the day was 2016).

Omg look what I just found whilst looking for a USB stick. Should I?

France just does protesting better.

Yesterday in Paris.

‘New data centres? No thanks’

A new logo for the Danish campaign against data centres. Lovely work by @snittegodskontoret - a lovely, clever counterpart to the ‘Nuclear Power? No Thanks’ logo. (Also a Danish design)

There's slop in xfce, lxde, mate. There's permissive policy in lxqt. Kde has bits with slop, Gnome has bits with slop. Sigh.

I chose jwm+rox because it's minimal win95-style desktop, currently seemingly slop free, and should be easy to support in a hard fork if need arises. But I wish it didn't have to come to this.

The year is 2026, and the viable options for desktop are probably: twm, ctwm, CDE, jwm, icewm, fvwm and windowmaker. Plus a handful of tiled wms. 30 years of desktop UI improvements, wiped out 😰

When I first learned about CollapseOS four years ago, I thought that it's a very cool concept, but did find the idea "you'll have to implement from scratch everything in your computing stack" very disconnected from the reality. Like, what kind of plausible scenario could there be that one won't be able to get system software for their computer that they could trust to be of safe origin, free from backdoors and malware, and fit for the purpose, I thought.

Ha-ha.

somebody should do /dev/sine and /dev/sawtooth to complement /dev/urandom for audio testing

lldb isn't a debugger, it's a Debugger. It's so formal. I feel like i'm talking to capcom.

*downlink AM noise* breakpoint set --name malloc_error_break
*uplink beep* copy that. breakpoint set
*downlink AM noise* process launch
*uplink beep* copy that. we are go for launch. process launching in, 5, 4, 3, ....

This is discrimination

Oh no, my Hit Toot (> 25 boosts) says "overestimates" when i meant "underestimates". Radically changing the reading. But i think the vibes are good. And i'm not so rude as to send an edit notif to, like 25, fedi people.

The entirety of Wirth's Oberon System - a multitasking OS, compiler, runtime and TUI library - would fit in the Pi 4's L2 cache. And there'd be room enough left over for...

~4 more copies of the entire Oberon System.
