It's Hamilton's Day! For a long time Hamilton was trying to invent a 3-dimensional number system where he could add, subtract, multiply and divide. Finally, on the 16th of October, 1843, he realized that he needed a 4-dimensional number system - now called the quaternions. While walking with his wife along the Royal Canal to a meeting of the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin, he made his momentous discovery:
"That is to say, I then and there felt the galvanic circuit of thought close; and the sparks which fell from it were the fundamental equations between 𝑖, 𝑗, 𝑘; exactly such as I have used them ever since."
And in a famous act of mathematical vandalism, he carved those equations into the stone of the Brougham Bridge.
Given such a romantic story, Tevian Dray and I could not resist trying to find this bridge when we were attending a conference on general relativity in Dublin - especially because we're both fans of the quaternions less-beloved kin, invented by Hamilton's friend John Graves: the octonions! So, on July 21st, 2004, we set out with a group of friends to find it.
Getting there was quite an adventure. But I hear it's gotten much simpler since 2004: I think now the 'Luas' green line tram runs through the city center directly to its terminus at Broombridge.
Hamilton's original carving is long since lost, but there's a plaque to commemorate his discovery. Unfortunately it's covered with graffiti, perhaps a form of poetic justice.
The text says:
Here as he walked by
on the 16th of October 1843
Sir William Rowan Hamilton
in a flash of genius discovered
the fundamental formula for
quaternion multiplication
𝑖² = 𝑗² = 𝑘² = 𝑖𝑗𝑘 = −1
& cut it on a stone of this bridge
Human-feline affiliative physiological synchronization describes the measurable correlation between the neuroendocrine states of domestic cats (Felis catus) and their human owners, wherein daily physical proximity directly correlates with elevated oxytocin concentrations, reduced cortisol levels, and improved psychological mood states in humans.

(Reuters) - The order to limit a satellite system used by Ukraine for battlefield communications and drone operations came from inside the White House. https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/order-limit-starshield-ukraine-came-inside-white-house-sources-say-2026-10-15/
Be honest.
- Agencies forced to rehire ~25,000 'essential' employees
-Public health/safety services degraded
- HHS, HUD, VA crippled
-End of US public diplomacy (State cuts; VOA silenced)
-USAID shutdown linked to spikes in disease, hunger, violence in Africa
- DOGE staff stole private data
Just saw someone (accidentally?) refer to the Bay Area as the Bayesian Area and now you can't see unsee it either.
And you can call this oversensitive, feel-good "woke" nonsense if you want, but I've got the data and I'm right: a code of conduct, community standards and moderation enforcing them, the psychological safety of your community, these are near term competitive advantages and long term survival necessities. Treating the process of getting involved and the experience of staying involved in your community _as a product_, worthy of usability testing and ergonomic refinement, that moves the needle.
financial markets' faith in post-Volckerism is absolutely extraordinary. no matter how badly the United States is mismanaged, its mismanagement becomes dollar strength on the theory the Fed will more than compensate USD holders for the mess with higher interest rates.
In https://www.infoworld.com/article/4232736/screencasting-in-the-ai-era.html ("How judicious use of agents can transform a software product into a user innovation toolkit.") I claimed that Bram Studio is an example of both a packaged screencast editor and an open-ended toolkit.
Today proved the point. I made a new screencast to illustrate https://www.infoworld.com/article/4224587/the-agent-coordination-protocol-hiding-in-plain-sight-github-issues.html ("The agent coordination protocol hiding in plain sight: GitHub issues"), and at the end needed some audio cleanup.
Here's how that went: https://judell.github.io/bram/extras/audio-track-excursion/. That's a session, as it rendered in Bram, in which Claude accomplished the cleanup using sqlite3, ffprobe, ffmpeg, swiftc, and the usual suspects: awk, sed, grep, etc. Individually these are just ordinary (but powerful) tools. Read the transcript, expand the tool calls, see how the agent forms, tests, and falsifies hypotheses, then composes the tools to get the job done.

If you recognize the Apple II peripheral in this photo...you're one of the few!🕹️
And if you actually HAVE one, or know someone who does... Please contact me!! I have some friends in Paris who are searching for one and so far have had no luck.

Double secret probation…
bringing me some hypercard (multi-user, persisted, with agent, a card takes barely a few hundred tokens to create. you can stack and share them). this took me like, months to figure out a while back. Now it's 2 prompts. kinda wild. It's almost as if the work was always figuring out what to build, and at times how...
ukraine blows up yandex data centers and right wing post engagement drops across social media in massive numbers
so instead of trying to regulate social media so russia can't undermine democracies and promote fascism, politicians are more concerned with banning kids from it instead?
nice priorities, idiots
edit: apparently the russian bot farm stuff may have been some wishful thinking?
