This dog loves going for car rides; he gets the back all to himself and the armrests are just the right height for his little legs :neodog_thumbsup:

lol yeah sure, bro, your datacenter sized LLM is going to install itself on a device whose flash size is measured in the megabytes 🙄

fucking stochastic script kiddies, the whole lot of them

A terminal UI is just a GUI where the graphics card is your imagination and the rendering engine is 50 years of accumulated technical debt.

Data:
- LLMs are killing the planet
- LLMs are raising utility prices
- LLMs are raising computer prices
- LLMs give you teh dums
- LLMs show negligible increases in net productivity
- LLM costs are going up
- LLMs run on stolen content
- LLM companies keep breaking laws and saying, "Oopsie!"

Open Source maintainers for some reason:
- We are debating our AI policy, but it's a tough decision. *whines*

Dudes. WTF is wrong with you?

Yeah, I get it. It's neat to be able to tell the robot what you want using natural language, as if you're talking to a person. It's also incredibly inefficient, imprecise, and misleading. It's not a person, it's a computer program that does a bunch of matrix multiplications.

The linear algebra machine is not your friend

this is the perfect metaphor to understand the distinction between AI doomer concerns versus AI skeptic concerns

The thing many people don't understand about discrimination is that it means you can never count on anything.

When straight white cis people order a cake, they get a cake.

When I order a cake, I might get a cake or I might waste hours and get nothing.

Coding agents reduce software development to a simple matter of:

* specifying requirements
* verifying correctness and quality
* maintaining and operating software you didn't write

As we all know, those have always been the easiest, most well-understood parts of the craft, so everything is fine!

ai does not have ideas
ai does not make suggestions
we are in a burning library and you are consulting grammar-checked tea leaves sold by the arsonists

call me old fashioned but I thought computer whisperers were supposed to understand the things we whispered to computers

"ai could solve the climate crisis" is how you know someone is not serious because 100% of the information needed to do that has been known for decades and the technology to do it exists, is mass produced, and is highly refined. unless ai can cure our billionaire disease it's not gonna do anything there

I've warned before that any FOSS project incorporating AI output is doing so at their peril.

Previously people leaned on a federal circuit ruling that was *declined to be taken up by the supreme court* interpreting it as a free-for-all to LLM license-wash any project in translation, or really to incorporate any such materials and they would be public domain.

But that doesn't mean we have an answer! We've yet to see!

Annnnnnnnnd: I think we're likely to have that perspective upended soon.

The third circuit issued a recent ruling in the *opposite direction* of the previously well cited federal ruling, that AI training on copyrighted material is NOT fair use: https://www.courthousenews.com/ai-training-of-copyrighted-material-not-fair-use-third-circuit/

Annnnndddddd.... with a bunch of people trying to make LLM-generated decompilation replacements for Adobe's entire suite, we're likely to suddenly see corporations rear up angrily.

Just wait till someone tries to vibewash a Nintendo game decompilation. Hey, what do you think is gonna happen?

I wrote a whole blog (several, in fact) about the need to break the ransomware economy cycle and still believe it’s the most urgent and important thing governments can do to protect civil society.

Having orgs pay ransoms, including via sham cybersecurity vendors, is directly harming society.

Maybe once the AI bubble pops, we can get back to having serious conversations about the harm the status quo has caused.

Also, you may have noticed, I don’t care.

no I didn't miss my alarm and oversleep, my snooze button went rogue!

A plumber, a dentist, and an off duty pilot enter a cockpit... (learning about the FlyDubai hijacking, holy moly what a wild ride)

I don’t know how to explain to people that just because certain things appear to approximately work doesn’t mean they actually work. This was already horrifically difficult before AI and now it’s damn near impossible to get the point across when literally any trivial example passes muster

The asymmetry between me having to provide a compelling defence that they can actually understand (without the required background knowledge) vs them being able to endlessly generate garbage in seconds is just… exhausting

i believe in such radical opinions that trans women should be allowed to be lazy and ugly and suck at things

oh lovelace she's using linked lists again
