one of these days they’re gonna hit me with systemd-systemd and I’m just gonna yank the power cable and go find a snack and a hobby.

I have tried, for as long as it as existed, to ignore as much of systemd as I can and still get things done that I want to get done, so I’ve picked up way more systemd-isms than I’d have liked to along the way, but it still gets me with a surprise now and again.

today is one of those surprise days, as I glanced at the output of htop and noticed a systemd module I’ve not noticed before: systemd-oomd because of course

history shows again and again how nature points out the folly of man

“Where is the Love” - Donny Hathaway & Roberta Flack

“On the Bus” - Frank Zappa

sure is a whole lot of just about everything except for so much right about now, huh? be nice when this system finally moves on.

also my thoughts and prayers are with derek and the laserdisc partiers during this time of strife. hoping their difficulties come to a positive resolution soon.

the fact that none of the bots trying to sign up for accounts on linernotes manage to mention anything thematically appropriate in their scripts seems to indicate that the fediverse viewed from the outside is a bunch of homogeneous entirely interchangeable independent frontends and like that’s just so not true but also it’s okay if people have to wade into getting a more nuanced view of the landscape in my opinion. but the bots can go to hell.

entropy sure scoring a lot of wins lately in its competition with We Who Would Like Just A Wee Bit of Order as a Treat

Matchbox 20 is thirty years old now and that’s just funny to say.

back in my day we were down with “give me convenience or give me death” but the race to the bottom has resulted in all of us seeming to settle for “give me inconvenience then give me death” and that just does not sound very punk rock, probably more emo really, no offense to my emo sibs.

my brain: the reason we get along so well with dogs is not that we domesticated them but that we domesticated each other so early in human social development

my brain a few moments later: maybe not the reason but a plotline from the reboot of “Cosmos” starring Neil deGrasse Tyson

my brain a few moments after that: but still, tastes right to me, send toot

Betty White did not do six days a week of live ad-libbed television for years on end for you to call your automated ad delivery streaming platform “live TV” you fucking absolute clod.

who the fuck decided “live TV” means “sequential programming in a channel-based format” all of a sudden? WHO THE FUCK DECIDED THAT? because it’s just so fucking wrong it hurts my goddamn head every time I see a glancing reference to it in those terms. what the actual fuck.

good god y’all

what is it good for?

I can’t believe it’s practically an extraction and reporting language

no, no, guys, you gotta understand, I can make the slopbot not do slop. yeah, yeah, I get it, you don’t think that’s possible because so many people cannot make the slopbot not do slop, but I can. I am The One. so lay off my slop project kthx.

and if the words I choose carry hidden connotations even when I’m using them with myself, what chance do those words have to convey my intended meaning to others?

Too often I think “how do we get this shit under control” when what I really mean to think is “how do we take stewardship of this shit so we can prevent it from being quite so shitty in the future”

I’ve been contemplating the concept of control recently and wondering if there’s ever a situation where it isn’t a negative.

It seems like we say things are under control or that we have control of a situation/environment/thing when we often mean things are being stewarded or that we have accepted stewardship of a situation/environment/thing, and I feel like it’s probably a bad signal to “stewardship-wash” the idea of “control” into something that’s not bad.

honestly, I think NLNet and other orgs handing out funding for open source projects should be taking a hardline stance on this when it comes to awarding grants.
