A brief history of the origins of Mastodon!

One of the pressure tire sensor of the car is probably broken/unconnected. I really dislike being totally unable to diagnostic it correctly or fixing it.

Testing tire pressure is pretty easy and the cost is close to 0 but handling all of those sensors and their computer system is such a pain....

If you ever feel like discounting the effort involved in doing an analysis or generating some research code, write a function that tells your *how much* code you've written.

I did this recently for my metabolomics database qc/qa analysis, and I was gobsmacked at how much code I've written.

6200 lines of R
230 functions

Doing my mandatory security training (yeahhhhh).

Why do deepfakes always use IT or RH persona? That is the two dpt that I believe the less

"Europe's far right has a Putin problem"

Let me correct that one, step 1:

Europe has a far right problem.

Step two:

The world has a far right problem.

My friends at Tweag are hiring:

Question for the #Rstats community : I'm looking for the names of women who are/were key contributors to the development of R and R toolchains, preferably in broad applied biology context.

Somebody asked me the other day and while I know quite some very capable women on the @Posit team, most names that come to mind (R core team and contributors, ppl like Dirk Eddelbuettel, James Balamuta, Gavin Simpson) are all men. So please enlighten me!

OSM fun fact from our Chief Architect, @ianthetechie: Lake Huron is the most complex type=multipolygon relation, with almost 15,000 ways. Here's a screenshot showing the outline + expanded way.

Three conspiracy theorists walked into a bar.  You can't tell me that's a coincidence.

I know there's research on bilingual people and how you're “a different person” when you speak the other language.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Any pointers?

My employer @tibhannover is looking for a Linux sysadmin with containerization and CI/CD expertise and reasonable fluency in German and English. Details: https://www.tib.eu/en/tib/careers-and-apprenticeships/vacancies/details/stellenausschreibung-nr-42-2026

Among other responsibilities, you'd be working closely with SHIELD, the @tibosl project I'm part of (see https://shield.tib.eu), and potentially – if you want – @SafeguardingResearch.

Job's in #Hannover, with partial remote work options. Application deadline is Nov 1.

New version of #rstats curl bindings on CRAN. On Windows/Mac, the statically linked libcurl includes the latest CVE patches. So if you are worried about these things, better update. On other operating systems, libcurl is part of your distro and has to be patched by them. https://cran.dev/curl

#rstats new (short) blog post on a small but nice change to my workflow when testing R packages.

This shows how I use the "Just" command line tool to run a subset of tests to quickly iterate when the entire test suite can take several minutes to complete.

Some significant memory and hence performance improvements in #futureverse are being rolled out. Some future.apply-based pkgs will run faster. Stay tuned.

Technically a bug fix. Troubleshooting a real case revealed hard-to-spot thinko => unnecessary data being exported to #parallel workers

working on 4 “characters” who are learning Git for the first time, to explain how Git branches work

trying to figure out if there are any major characters I’m missing (the idea is to give an example of how each of them might use branches, like Emilia might just be running `git push` to back up her thesis)

I'm so happy: My textbook "Data Analysis for the Language Sciences: A very gentle introduction to statistics and data visualisation in R" has been *accepted pending revisions* at @langscipress! 🎉

Both reviewers seem to have really read all 15 chapters in great detail which is really cool and also very generous of them because it's a long read: Thank you whoever you are! One has written a 17-page (!) document with requests for revisions which is a bit scary, but having just scanned both reviews, all the reviewers' comments seem very sensible and addressing them will allow me to correct a few errors and hopefully make the textbook even better! 💪
