This is Pele, my new rendering library for diagrams and charts, compatible with the latest Mermaid syntax.

- 100-500× faster than mermaid.js
- 6× smaller bundle
- No dependencies
- Easy to theme
- Responsive to device width

In pursuit of making #Obsidian insanely fast and cohesively designed, I always found the Mermaid library to be too big, too slow, and too hard to theme. Pele will be the new renderer in the next version of Obsidian, but you can start using it now!

Slop code is slop code of course. But that’s rapidly becoming an out-of-date stereotype. When used well, coding agents _are_ a powerful tool.

Let’s talk about the morality, intellectual property theft, the AI bubble and the environmental impacts _without_ the out of out-of-date stereotypes.

Hi #FreeBSD community. FYI, for those who use `pkg-base` and bump into this:

```
USER@HOST$ pkg update
Updating FreeBSD-ports repository catalogue...
...
Newer FreeBSD version for package zonenotify:
To ignore this error set IGNORE_OSVERSION=yes
- package: 1501000
- running userland: 1500068
Ignore the mismatch and continue? [y/N]:
```

There is an official `15.1-RELEASE` release. You need to upgrade first before any package upgrades. Instruction in the link:

Cheers!

RT: @SaulStaniforth "The purpose of the genocide convention is to prevent genocide.."

Navi Pillay with a message for everyone who says countries don't need to act because a court hasn't found Israel guilty of genocide

Had my first moment today where someone full-on presented in a meeting with "claude just wrote this as we joined, I haven't looked at it, so we'll go over it together"

I've seen a lot of AI-made presentations in the last few months, but I've yet to experience the joy of seeing someone read one *themselves for the first time* and just think in real time if it's what they meant

truly a terrible timeline

Nothing new, but I'm disappointed.

Many years ago, Linux represented the alternative. The question was: "Why don't you just use Windows? It's easier." And the answer was, almost always: "To be free."

The "bazaar" spirit of Linux and its distributions made us feel free. Personally, I've always thought that the "cathedral" approach of the BSDs produces more reliable and maintainable results. But that feeling of freedom was fantastic.

There wasn't a company deciding everything. There was a kernel developed by people following what they believed was right. Or what the community, in one way or another, was asking for.

Torvalds has always been quite outspoken (remember the middle finger to Nvidia?). But the general spirit was, again, freedom. Anyone, sitting in their bedroom, could contribute in some way. Even me.

Today, after the embrace of AI, I read statements about wanting only "serious" contributors, "serious" contributions, because the world depends on this code and reliability must come first.

I understand the problem. Maintaining the Linux kernel is a huge responsibility. And low-quality contributions, especially those blindly generated with AI, are a real problem.

But what I hear, between the lines, is something like: "Hey, kid in your bedroom. If you don't have the right tools, the money to afford them, or the experience we expect, maybe your contribution isn't even worth considering."

Am I exaggerating? Maybe. But this is what I got from the tone and content of the latest public statements.

And it makes me sad.

Because it feels like a transformation towards what we wanted to escape, back then.

So please don't ask me why the BSD community, imperfect as it is, feels like home to me.

When I see young people, with limited resources, being able to contribute and attend conferences (thanks to the support of the Foundations), and I see the enthusiasm in their eyes, I feel at home.

Because I still remember what it meant to be that kid in a bedroom.

And I really hope we never close the door in their face.

Hello everyone,
I am still trying to find an employment for a friend migrating from the USA to Germany. He qualified for B2 German language level already and is working on his C1 right now.
He has been working in front- and backend developement, focused on vanilla js and angular, but willing to do anything in that area.
He has multiple years in experience and something close to Karlsruhe would be great.
Please only reply if you have some actual company names or open listings :) TY

One of the ecology postgrads working with me at the moment, Dee Patel, has spent this year doing lots of data curation work, and now stats analysis, on my 23-years of ongoing high frequency bird counts between Ōtautahi-Christchurch city and Lincoln town in Canterbury, NZ. That's where I repeatedly map and count birds while biking and running along 172 km of standard routes about the landscape.

Dee got the first preliminary results for all birds this week and one clear story is worth sharing: of the ~21 species of native and endemic birds that were seen often enough to be able to analyse a trend, *ALL* have increased in numbers over the past two decades.

All of them!!

Many have increased by large amounts, and on average, the NZ endemics are up more than the natives we share with other countries.

Over the same period, the introduced birds (mostly English birds) have mostly stayed about the same, with just a few declines (eg Muscovy duck are down a bit).

It's a strikingly different result from what's been reported in the media from some other parts of the world. I expect it's due to the big increases here in regeneration and planting of native vegetation and mammalian predator control, leading to a resurgence of native species in areas where they'd declined last century. We've also had the agricultural intensification and urban expansion and warming climate seen in most of the world, but those negative effects on birds seem to (so far) have been more than offset by the return of native vegetation and reduction in predators.

Dee's due to complete and submit her thesis early next year so there's still plenty of work to do before we get the details ironed out and figure out all the nuances in the story. Still, the overall result is looking really promising for the city's birds.

#FreeBSD I’m finding my #iwlwifi #AX210 fails to receive ipv6 RA messages so SLAAC doesn’t work. Anybody else able to try?

IPv4 works fine.

https://community.intel.com/t/intel-ax2xx-wi-fi-6e-and-ipv6-slaac and several other threads for windows and Linux suggest this may be a firmware / hardware issue.

Hi everyone, let’s see if I can #getfedihired :3 :BoostOK:

I recently completed my Master’s degree in Computer Science at the University of Stuttgart, and am looking for job opportunities, remote or in-person (preferably around Stuttgart). I’m primarily qualified for and interested in embedded and hardware-adjacent software/firmware. Main languages are Rust (preferred), C++, and Python.

I can send full CV in English and German on request. See also: https://filmroellchen.eu/cv/
