Something I occasionally think about, and then proceed to be horrified to my core over, is this:

A Raspberry Pi 4 *vastly* outperforms an Amiga 4000. Or a Symbolics XL1200. Or an SGI Octane. A typical microSD card is *much* faster than a Seagate Cheetah Ultra320 SCSI HDD you might have found in a high-end Unix workstation back in the day.

But the Pi 4 is barely able to run modern-day office software or browse the mainstream web. The microSD card is mostly considered a slow piece of junk (which it very likely is, though for other reasons than its performance).

What the fuck are we even doing here?

adding structural pattern matching (match/case) to the language was a mistake imo. feels like a poor idea to introduce completely new meanings for existing syntax in just one weird corner of the language (like using | for "or patterns", "as" for capture, [] to match any kind of sequence, not just lists, etc). and the "class matching" is honestly baffling, e.g., "match Foo()" means "match anything that is an instance of class Foo" (and not "match against a new object of class Foo")

I have four degrees in software engineering. For nearly two decades, I've written projects like "Spam Filter Everyone Uses" or "Universal Firewall Manager" or "Working Data Base". I'm absolutely qualified to say that programming is hard! But with the power of ClodCode™, I can finally work on important projects like "Existing App but Ported to Ruby" or "Music Player With No Unique Features" or "Weather App". Don't get left behind! ClodCode™ is the future, and it's here to stay.

torvalds is really speedrunning all the major “dickhead manager discovers the slopbot” points

and of course, observers know what comes next: trying to shout over every breakage, every maintainer that leaves, every instance where using LLMs has proven to be a horrible fucking idea

nobody operating in good faith thinks an LLM is like a compiler. this is an AI booster meme from early 2026. but torvalds has a captive audience, so his bad takes don’t need to be new. expect to see this crap parroted once again by the worst guys you know. https://mastodon.social/@nixCraft/117451805824031590

I release my work as free software mostly in the hopes that other developers will read the code, learn from it, and help improve it. In this case, the person has learned from it, claimed a number of my ideas as his own, lied about the rest, and now is going to take what he's learned to build something that he won't freely share with everyone. All of which I find deeply offensive.

None of what he builds would have happened without my decades of work. Beyond rude...

Linus Torvalds shares his thoughts on Anti-AI coding rules on Linux mailing list.

He is doubling down on AI. This will come back to bite him. He thinks people using LLMs for coding are actually checking their work 😂 Code reviewers are just rubber stamping PRs. Nobody in their right mind can look at 100s of PRs per day &d manually go through them especially since they don't even know if they'll have a IT job left at the end of the day. It's a race to the bottom now

At this point, something seems very "wrong" about the forces driving this kind of usage.

Bad move, Steve. Bad move.

Imagine believing we use cars because we choose to and not 100 years of car and oil companies going out of their way to make cars the only usable option.

Imagine using this belief to defend llms.

I'm starting to get motivated, we can start to think about a foundational meeting, maybe at FOSDEM'27?

I just saw a disturbing comment that AI meant someone was never going to release another software project.

I think it might be good to look at the BSD perspective on releasing free software. Permissive licensing means you don't really care what someone does with your code, aside from claiming copyright themselves. While this is indeed a problem with Grand Theft Autocomplete, it's a legal problem and the criminals aren't getting their way without a fight.

I'm going to keep sharing what I do. No one can take my pleasure in creating systems away from me. I saw a meme not long ago - someone created a robot to eat ice cream for them so they didn't have to.

Just because other people are deploying ice cream eating robots, we don't have to stop eating ice cream ourselves.

The more you use a tool, the more you learn.

The more you use GenAI, the more it learns.

GenAI is not a tool. You are the one used.

Thinking back to early in my career, sitting in a meeting room with print outs of code and a highlighter, with the goal of deleting us much of it as possible, because everyone understood that each line was a liability, and a drag on every outstanding requirement.

*sigh*

Is there any serious attempt to create an anti-ai entity? Because it looks like the open source foundations are embracing AI, maybe it's time to start to move something new and do some lobbying. It could be something general or specific to programming
