Sure, GPT-6 and Claude may have made some progress on square-packing optimality this week, but Max and Pixel are tackling a more important problem: finding the optimal packing of two cats into one cat bed.
This is interesting. European, privacy respecting payment app for phones. Even Sailfish is on roadmap.
Just finished reading @dim0kq 's book Ordinary man at war. It was really well written and thought provoking book. As a IT guy, dog lover and drone flyer it was easy to relate to thoughts and decisions he made.
I'm lucky to live 1600km away from front line, so best I can do is donate to Dzyga's Paw foundation and spread the word.
Order the book at https://kovyla.pub/dimko and donate at https://dzygaspaw.com/
My Astro Slide fell and now the screen is dead. I have used scrcpy to mirror it's screen on a computer before, but looks like phone asks for auhtorization when trying to connect to it. Developerr mode is on. Anyone remember what keys can be pressed to authorize it?
Meshtastic folks! I have created a patched firmware that introduces new role I call "Shy".
It's intended for nodes that move between urban and rural areas. It works like Client, but In urban areas it becomes "Shy" and acts like Client_Mute.
Shy mode is activated if the node has heard 5 different nodes in last 15 minutes.
This is not a real role yet and replaces client_mute. Choose Client_mute in client to use this. Display shows "Shy" if shy mode is on.

Oh, at last a open 2D printer! I've been waiting for this. If it's successful, It'll be the last printer I buy.
Got this phone up and running, and it is every bit as satisfying as I had hoped to be able to dial using punch cards.
Launching their new social network, W, a group in the EU posted a map of where other social networks are hosted. It showed nothing in Europe.
But their map is wrong.
Here's what Mastodon actually looks like, and what the Fediverse as a whole actually looks like.
I need a long distance (~300m) network connection through forest. Wireless or lasers don't like any obstacles so I need to rule them out.
Cat6 official max distance is 100m, but what if I would slow the speed down to 10mbps - would it allow longer cable runs? Online searches reveal that there is lot of ai-generated or just copied content without answers.
Just wanted to upgrade our Mastodon instance. It's installed from git with char limit patch, so it's really daunting. I really wish we could just use docker..
This issue is 6 years old and STILL it's not configurable. I like Mastodon but this seems somewhat hostile against server administrators.
While cleaning a storage room, our staff found this tape containing #UNIX v4 from Bell Labs, circa 1973
Apparently no other complete copies are known to exist: https://gunkies.org/wiki/UNIX_Fourth_Edition
We have arranged to deliver it to the Computer History Museum
The boost button now opens a context menu instead of boosting. I do not like this new design.
Apple Meshtastic client issue about it sending telemetry home without consent has been deleted. This is highly suspicious and I wouldn't trust the app anymore. Maybe it's time to fork it and clean out all the tracking.
I have problem with my Heltec V3 node. I installed a 150 Ah LiPo battery in it, stolen from cat toy. Lasted 2 hours 20 minutes.
Now it's again in state that connecting USB power just lights up the red light. Nothing else. The light went out after a while so I suppose it's fully charged now.
It seems the device doesn't reset itself to booting state after power is restored.
Anyone else noticed this and is there any solution? It's unusable with battery as it is.
Took first steps with Meshtastic. I got HELTEC v3 boards. Some notes:
- Flashing was easy, except Ubuntu has Chromium as snap, and it can't access serial ports without command line magic. Bad UX, Ubuntu!
- Web configurator is quite good, but could be easier. Lot of parameters available. AFAIK some such as fixed location need to be set via python cli.
- I set one device as router and it stopped responding on serial. Not sure if this is expected.
@solarphasing according to comments this is new AI generated music. It sounds like modern synthwave. The record doesn't exist in discogs.
tl;dr Fake AI junk
I'm looking for suggestion for a new sofa keyboard/mouse combo. Previously I used Logitech DiNovo Edge (in photo) but it seems to be discontinued.
Any other good alternatives for a sofa keyboard with integrated mouse?
I just noticed OpenStreetMap has way to tag Mastodon accounts: contact:mastodon - please use it when possible.
Is there a standard way to tag Matrix address? I guessed it would be contact:matrix and tagged our hackerspace with it.
What would be the proper way to get contact:matrix added "officially"?
Someday I will bring an iPod and plug it in to this mysterious port in the airplane seat and see what happens
