A very interesting video about Polymorphs:
The crystals that wiped out an HIV medication, almost overnight.
How chocolate can have different textures depending on how it was formed.
The Tin Pest.

I really enjoyed it, even if it's not my main knowledge field.

Many years ago, I decided to make opening a new tab in my browsers open the #Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random page. and it's just the best.

The results vary a lot in terms of interest, of course. but rarely do I learn nothing, and every so often? Just a pure gem: Today for example: I was introduced to: Aristolochia chilensis (orejas de zorro "fox ears").

Native to Chile, this vine is kinda like a pitcher plant, but *feeds* the flies instead of digesting them (and also smells bad, is poisonous and feeds caterpillars who also then become poisonous!):

Lo típico en el "interné moderno". Jóvenes queriendo pasar un rato sano y divertido en un servidor de Discord, participando en una simulación de juegos del hambre, y no poder hacerlo porque #LaLigaGate. #DerechosDigitales

This is what pull requests used to look like.

(The last sentence is particularly remarkable!)

Thanks to suggestions from others, I did this with a much larger dataset of 27k fediverse servers (10x as many as my last post). This time the data is from https://fedilist.com/instance

Here's what I get:

CloudFlare does sit in front of a large number of servers (4620) but a smaller percentage: 17%

Hetzner is replaced by OVH, barely, as the second most popular host, each host about 11% of fediverse servers

Top 10 networks in this dataset:

3000 Cloudflare, Inc.
2471 Hetzner Online GmbH
1009 DigitalOcean, LLC
861 OVH SAS
655 Akamai Connected Cloud
627 netcup GmbH
353 Amazon.com, Inc.
340 IONOS SE
334 Oracle Corporation
327 Contabo GmbH

The astute reader will notice that this does not match what I said above re: Hetzner and OVH; this is because the first set of stats counts each *domain* once, and this set counts each *IP address* once. Many of the domains at OVH are hosted from a handful of IP addresses, this is likely due to masto.host but I didn't look deeply.

Here are the top 10 IP addresses hosting fediverse servers:

681 94.23.75.107 (OVH)
657 54.38.247.97 (OVH)
481 151.101.3.7 (Fastly)
255 104.21.16.1 (CloudFlare)
251 178.33.220.142 (OVH)
184 50.56.249.138 (Rackspace)
172 217.182.80.236 (OVH)
166 104.22.76.159 (CloudFlare)
144 151.101.131.7 (Fastly)
135 139.99.39.10 (OVH Singapore)

Now, the majority fediverse servers are on networks that host *five or fewer* fedivserse servers. Six thousand fediverse servers are the only one on their network.

To take out half of the fediverse (remember, we're talking servers here, not users), you'd have to take out more than *three hundred networks*.

Top countries in this bigger dataset:

7114 United States
4230 Germany
1248 France
862 Japan
605 Finland
599 United Kingdom
565 Netherlands
529 Canada
221 Australia
217 Switzerland

And by continent (as defined by ipinfo):

8874 Europe
7661 North America
1218 Asia
250 Oceania
73 South America
24 Africa

Several folks suggested other interesting analyses:

* A post that peeks behind the CloudFlare curtain: https://blog.benjojo.co.uk/post/who-hosts-the-fediverse-instances

* A cool site that displays similar data in a much more pretty form, and has some per-user data: https://fedi.wrm.sr/

* A graph that shows that while there are big instances of course, users are actually spread across a large set of instances overall: https://aus.social/@Drbruced/114335400872850185

Thanks to the people that brought these to my attention!

On Github, until recently, starring a repository you've contributed to (even if it's a mirrored one like MediaWiki and their skins and extensions) would make your commits to it show up on your profile. This is no longer the case.
Your commit contributions on your profile is a good presentation about you for someone looking for hiring. Now some profiles will look empty where they were displaying lots of activity before.

Hey! Let's talk about #SSH and #security!

If you've ever looked at SSH server logs you know what I'm about to say: Any SSH server connected to the public Internet is getting bombarded by constant attempts to log in. Not just a few of them. A *lot* of them. Sometimes even dozens per second. And this problem is not going away; it is, in fact, getting worse. And attackers' behavior is changing.

The graph attached to this post shows the number of attempted SSH logins per day to one of @cloudlab s clusters over a four-year period. It peaks at about 3.4 million login attempts per day.

This is part of a study we did on our production system, using logs of more than 640 million login attempts, covering more than 1,500 hosts on our side and observing more than 840 thousand incoming IP addresses.

A paper presenting our analysis and a new, highly effective means to block SSH brute force attacks ("Where The Wild Things Are: Brute-Force SSH Attacks In The Wild And How To Stop Them") will be presented next week at #NSDI24 by @sachindhke . The full paper is at https://www.flux.utah.edu/paper/singh-nsdi24

Let's dive in. 🧵

#introduction
I'm a software developer, sysadmin and wiki editor. Open source enthusiast. I'm the "technical guy" behind wikidex.net, and I usually move around MediaWiki technical spaces trying to help when I can.
I live in Barcelona, Spain.
Pokémon fan and interested in science. Not very good at social interaction, but I can listen.
I'll probably fav and boost related status and not write a lot of my own stuff

Acabo de instalar esta instancia de Mastodon y todavía voy a estar haciendo algunos ajustes. Ha costado un poco prepararlo todo pero parece que funciona.

Este es mi primer toot en el fediverso.
