omg, two posts in one month? The wonders truly never cease :blobfoxwhoaa:
You can think of this post as a spiritual Part 2 to my previous post on the Chudification of Open Source. While that piece looked at the current cultural friction in developer spaces, this one explores the history and why the "apolitical sanctuary" everyone misses never actually existed.
I present, The Myth of Neutral Code.

Finally got around to writing a post that was a long time coming. Here's some of my thoughts on corporate extraction, fascist sympathizers, and reclaiming ethics in tech.

I really wish more FOSS projects explicitly mentioned their values and what they stand for somewhere because it's getting real annoying having to guess and then finding out it's #fashware.

I'd like to quickly shoutout WiVRn.
It's a FOSS application that lets you stream VR games from your linux PC to your standalone VR headsets (Quest, Pico).
I'm frequently playing around with VR on linux and steamvr isn't the best experience because it jitters a ton on linux, but with WiVRn everything is buttery smooth and things pretty much "just work" as you would expect them to.
My Beat Saber tracking is also way more accurate on WiVRn than on SteamVR.
Seriously an incredible job by all the devs involved.

So, a few months ago I suddenly stopped being able to pay for stuff on Google Play (I know, I know).
I thought it was because my bank was being weird (it happens sometimes), but ever since that day I haven't been able to make any purchases on any of Googles' platforms.
A couple of weeks ago, I got an email from them saying that they're changing the region of my Google account to Singapore, which would've been fine if I lived in Singapore, but I live in India and I've never left the country lmao.
Turns out, because I have a vpn on 24/7 on my devices, Google just assumed I live in Singapore and decided to make that switch without consulting with me, and now I can't do any transactions over google play because of that mismatch.
I spent the majority of today trying to get support for this issue, but I've just been stonewalled the whole time.
The two times I managed to get in touch with a human through this ordeal ended up with emails that pretty much amounted to "we can't do anything, just make sure your google play matches the country you live in lmao".
Anyway, this is just reaffirming my decision to degoogle various parts of my life over the years. Definitely super happy that I'm not overly reliant on Google to get stuff done.

Also, while I'm on this, have people been lying about lead-free solder being hard to use?
Today was my first time soldering ever and it wasn't hard to use at all.
I just did my first electronics repair. Fixed up an old multimeter we had lying around.
It was a simple repair, sure, but there's so much satisfaction in seeing the thing come back to life.
The only thing on my mind right now is that I should've gotten into this stuff way earlier. This is so much fun. :blobfoxlaughsweat:
