@mcc @glyph Perforce had a great busy cursor back in the day, before they rewrote the UI.

Oh, I bet I could write a git subtree tool as a just module

9pm on a wednesday is definitely the time to decide you really need to port one of your programs to Windows 3.1

spoiler alert: you'll be porting it forward

the issue is most of the math they made me do at my last school was kiki math (math problems) but at the new school it's all bouba math (pedantry about what words mean)

Wrote a simple source browser for CFM on PicoCalc! Now you can easily scroll through the system sources. Both directions, fast, thanks to some careful use of the LCD controller.

That's the actual source of the running system, btw. You could change it, recompile, and reboot, without a bigger computer.

I'm color coding screens by index to make it easier to see the boundaries.

I'm talking about AI of course but this is barely even a problem that AI has made worse. "Sure, I'll think about the problems, but it's just an app, what harm could it do" says a programmer under 50 with sciatica, myopia, diplopia, hypertension, repetitive stress injuries in their neck and wrists, heart disease, chronic anxiety, chronic headaches, burnout, depression, and cPTSD

I'm exhausted, most of all, by talking to programmers who have an absolutely unshakeable ideological commitment to the idea that none of our tools could possibly hurt us, that programming is an easy job with no dangers, simply because it involves a lot of sitting down and thinking quietly, that any ill effects must be merely shaken off as a mindset problem. even people who can look at a tool and intellectually discuss its possible dangers will never take that information and simply stop using it

Actually, I'll ask Fedi's advice here. What would you recommend for a bright 11-year-old who is interested in chemistry and ready to go beyond baking soda and vinegar experiments? They've expressed curiosity about the periodic table and why it is the way it is. They are very good at soaking up and remembering facts, but their reading is a little shaky.

Someone needs to adapt the install-python action to #Forgejo

Mostly, it should also install poetry/pipenv/uv/pip-tools/etc based on what's in your repo/what you ask for

@mcc furby organ guy in the hague

parsing a json-ld document is a fetch quest with a lootbox reward structure

@foone this is a reason I love having paid interns at my employer. They don't know what isn't possible, ask questions of our assumptions and Chesterton's Fences, and generally force us to reconsider decisions - sometimes it's "yeah, sure, we can change that", others it's "no, it's that way for good reasons that still hold". But it forces us to reevaluate our work

@Unixbigot The old Midshipman in the Middle attack, I learned about that in the academy.

As scheduled since Spacedate 42159.3 Spacefleet is today ending support for Personnel Transport Protocol. As you should be aware only Secure Serialised Humanoid protocol will be available for beaming to and from Spacefleet vessels from this date.

Yikes that snuck up on me. I mean I’m technically ready but I’ll miss the old way. Nicking pocket change from transporting spacefleet personnel was good while it lasted.

calling my bedroom an engineerium because it:

- contains many machines and tools used by engineers
- contains an engineer you can come and look at like a fish in an aquarium

It's ok to prioritize your own health.
It's ok to tend to your own needs.
It's ok to look like a weary potato.
It's ok to wear a crown of ancient bones.
It's ok to become the most haunting thing in a very haunted world.

Trying to feel better about myself after a shit day so I showered and got somewhat done up even though I have nowhere to go.
