Reverse plot twist: the actual events in the opera is just all of them standing around in the drawing room going "Norma, sacrifices again!? We've talked about this! What will the neighbours think?"

ancient druids committing human sacrifice

the opera "Norma" definitely has one of the biggest "how mundane i thought what it was going to be about based on the title" to "what it's actually about" gaps of any work of fiction.

i guessed based on title, genre (opera seria) and year of premiere (1831) that it was going to be about some contemporary gentlewoman named Norma who maybe is from a downwardly mobile aristocratic household or maybe is in an unhappy marriage or something

This is an incredibly important thread about sexism in the workplace (and how to make it less brutal) but as an aside: "culture fit" is a huge red flag in queer and ND communities too. No, we don't all listen to the same music or enjoy the same shows or go to the same places or practice the same hobbies. Anyone telling you otherwise is trying to pull a fast one.

@Xibanya @jannem @noodlemaz calling out people's sexism is also like, an extremely slow fix? it takes years and years of work to root out a bunch of random subconscious sexist beliefs you may have. the men who are doing honest hard work addressing their biases will still be dumb and sexist during the whole process. having "hi we hired the assistant that takes notes and make coffee" protects women engineers from psychic damage from day 1

@noodlemaz @Xibanya @jannem as someone who's also been The Only Senior Woman(-shaped) i thought manuela's perspective was great tbh. i view it less coddling and more like, actually decentering men in an empowering way? stuff like "if we just hold all men accountable" still centers men. its definitely important to call bullshit out, but we can still take other steps to build a better place that isn't just having to fix the men.

@Xibanya a thing I learned as a manager who is very good at running a meeting while taking notes at the same time is that it is a skill and most people (especially men) are absolutely terrible at it - often resulting in things they're (often unconsciously) not paying full attention to (like women talking) not getting written down at all.

You either need a competent person taking notes or text to speech, else you'll have meeting notes that are at best useless and at worst erase participants.

I don’t work in software, but I’ve spent some time around people in offices, and this is a very relatable thread.

will all this solve sexism? lolno.
but it will make it easier to make software

For those outside of the US, ADA refers to the Americans with Disabilities Act and OSHA is Occupational Safety and Health Administration. So the "make the woman stand on a crate" incident would not happen in a workplace following these regulations because
1. u gotta account for people who can't stand (thus must have actual ass tables)
2. u cant make a lady stand on a wobbly slidey plastic crate all day because jfc

- make u project managers pay attention to who is talking and if someone cuts a woman off during a meeting have them moderate (big props to the PMs I have known who were great at this)
- make taking notes a rotating task or use voice to text or something
- get one of them fancy pro tier coffee machines with buttons n stuff
- if u meetings are longer than an hour, bathroom breaks pls
- WORK FROM HOME, LET EVERYONE WORK FROM HOME

help i am a man what can i do proactively to keep sexism from making it harder for us to make software aside from purging the sin from my heart??

a few things
- make u workplace ADA and OSHA complient
- do not use "culture fit" (aka "do they have my same hobbies") as hiring criteria
- have an office administrator on payroll whose job it is to do stuff like make sure there is enough coffee n pens n shit; if u cant afford one dont make this a female senior engineer's job for some unholy reason

@Xibanya Your very smart points remind me of the “hierarchy of hazard controls”. Sexism and, idk, fluorine gas are maybe not that different in some ways.

I am bedbound by a condition which can only be diagnosed by a particular test, without that diagnosis nobody will prescibe me anything for it (I have begged multiple doctors to no avail) I got the appointment for the test half a year ago. when I was like pls put me on wait-list if u have a no show I can be there instantly they were like lol everyone asks for that so ull be behind everyone else. im like help i am bedbound. they are like lol everyone else is too
