I post here often, but have never introduced myself.

I’m Josh, the person behind Transient Archive. I use this project as a creative outlet. The project also provides structure to develop skills I seek.

Expect posts about drums, music, mixing and mastering audio, and photographs.

If you’re interested in these topics, please follow me.

The Egret doesn’t fly away when I stop to take a photograph. I guess we’re friends now.

Some bonus fishes, too.

Thanks for looking.

The Bmye Egret seems to be getting more tolerant of me. I was able to get close enough to snap this picture.

Normally the Blue Egrets don’t let me get close enough for photos. Today was different.

I was up early this morning. As I had coffee on the porch I found some inspiration in a streetlight.

Have a great day.

I use my iPhone 17 Pro and the Cinema P3 app to capture video of recording sessions. I also use GoPro Hero action cameras for additional footage and camera angles.

Everything is recorded in 4k at 60 fps and a shutter speed of 120. iPhone footage is captured using the ProRes 422 codec and Apple Log 2.

All footage is edited and combined with mastered audio in Davinci Resolve. I do not use AI effects. At most, I apply color grading, film grain, and simple transitions.

I do use Google Gemini to plan aspects of this project - AI can be a useful tool for researching, planning, and scheduling workflows. Beyond that, the project remains fully human and focused on expanding my own creative limits.

In terms of plugins, I use Reaper's stock ReaEQ, ReaComp, JS: 1175, JS: Transient Controller, and ReaVerb.

To give reverb some real-life character, I use IR files from the EchoThief project. The IR files are models of real sound reflections in real spaces.

In terms of tape saturation, I use ChowDSP Chow Tape Model, which is a fantastic open source project originally based on the Sony TC-260 reel-to-reel tape machine. I chose this plugin because it is free and open source.

This project will never include sounds created by Artificial Intelligence, nor will the project include sample replacement, quantization algorithms, or other similar techniques to producing sound.

At most, this project uses EQ, compression, transient controllers, reverb, and tape saturation plugins. These are fairly standard plugins that harness and elevate acoustic sounds captured from a human performance.

This project, Transient Archive, is focused on producing drum sounds and footage using a relatively minimalist approach in a small room with very little audio/sound treatment.

My approach includes the use of only four inexpensive microphones in a Glyn Johns configuration, an inexpensive USB audio interface, and Reaper Digital Audio Work Station.

The point of this minimalist approach is to capture real acoustic sounds in the space available to me.

Rehearsal soon! Here to set up early, as a drummer does.
