Vacation's over.

After another downsizing at my previous employer I find myself looking for new challenges.

I'm a programmer/admin with 30 years of professional experience in Linux. I have built full SAAS platforms and technical teams.

My passion is performance, and I have a track record of making DBMS systems do as they are told at both vertical and extremely horizontal scales.

All this while having an eye on system security.

If you're thinking "I have this need, but I'm not sure if it's possible", I can tell you if it's possible, and make it happen from the ground up if necessary.

We do not use the tools of the enemy to fight the enemy.

They are shaped to aid the enemy's agenda and interests even when used with good intentions

asbestos critics are so angry and reactionary, they really need to try asbestos themselves and educate themselves on the current state of asbestos - it's made a lot of progress in the last year! - before making me feel b- err, criticizing it.

We’ve bombed Iran. And dismantled our joint terrorism task force. And sent a third of the FBI to help ICE. And gutted the National Security Council. And a drunk guy is in charge at the Pentagon. And our intelligence allies probably won’t share intel with us. Because people couldn’t vote for a Black woman.

‘So yeah, he’s even dumber than you’

Just seeing Higgs bosons is not really enough to check how consistent it is with the predictions of the standard model. This #CMSPaper compares the kinematic behaviour of Higgs bosons for different decay signatures - to check consistency in production and decay 😎 arxiv.org/abs/2504.13081

The NYT, in the middle of its crusade to kill kids, wants you to think they believe in applying a standard of "safe, legal, but rare" to trans healthcare, a standard that sabotaged abortion care as well by prioritizing the anti-abortion movement's fake concerns over people needing help.

Use Signal. We promise, no AI clutter, and no surveillance ads, whatever the rest of the industry does. <3

Is there some kind of correlation between being trans and listening to EVERY SINGLE music genre and listening to EVERY song. (I have so much of 'random' songs that you will never know if you didn't intentionally searched them or if you weren't chronically online so much that YouTube started recommending it to you) is it common with trans people or is it depression thing? Or something else? #trans

Juneteenth is the perfect moment to remind everyone of these two facts:

1. Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
2. Those who prevent history from being taught are plotting to repeat it.

Read this out loud. Read it again. Then teach it to your kids.

Google to offer 1 slightly expired fun sized Snickers, and an insincere apology after massive data breach.

What if we arrested them. What if, next time an unidentified, masked, armed bandit tries to snatch a child or a mother off the street, we just arrested them for impersonating a police officer and attempted kidnapping.

No waiting for police. No demanding information from them they clearly will never voluntarily give us. No filming them committing atrocities while doing nothing about it.

Just arrest them. Pile on top and zip tie their hands together. Park a car on them. Whatever. They want to pretend to be cops? Ok. Let's citizens arrest them and see if and/or who they are.

@fireborn @pixelate stalebot is stupid. Any project that has stalebot is just the devs saying we don't want to actually keep track of issues

Lmao.

That's news to my US vet friends. The most recent left the service two years ago, and they most certainly did drill. It's part of basic training, and it's used all the time in ordinary interactions. It's not taught for the reason it was taught in 1750, for sure, but it is absolutely taught.

Because it's a vehicle for introducing raw recruits into acting as a unit, following orders immediately and without hesitation, functioning cohesively with your foxhole buddies...it's a simple but very effective training technique on the path of creating soldiers out of civilians.

Similar rituals occur, for instance, in Japanese corporate culture, with mass fitness exercises and award ceremonies with organised standing, to enhance team feeling and corporate loyalty.

So when I see a whole unit marching completely out of step, in a formal unit parade? Followed by three out of four other units in the parade doing the same? That's no accident. We simply disagree, I'm afraid. Which is fine. :)

But if you'll notice, all the people who actually know and study history are freaking out right now.

@heidilifeldman

Four years under Biden and eight years under Obama I don't recall any elected official being forcibly dragged out of a press conference. I don't recall any State Nat'l Guard units being commandeered by the Federal Gov't. I don't recall the Marines being turned against US citizens.

While the actions by Trump and his appointees concern me what really scares me is the obedient and violent enforcement of these actions by police, bodyguards and soldiers. The US is at risk not because of Trump but because so many will dutifully follow his orders and will turn on their fellow citizens.

Why isn't the media talking about this? Why isn't the story that the Marines and CA Nat'l Guard actually showed up and followed extreme orders? Why isn't the story that a half dozen bodyguards and cops followed orders to forcibly drag a Calif Senator out of the room? Ask these people why they are following Trump. Ask these people if they remember the oaths they took to serve the Constitution or to Protect & Serve the public.
