In a new study bumble bees solved a completely novel object-manipulation task. What makes this behaviour especially remarkable is that the bees had never been trained. The findings challenge the long-standing assumption that spontaneous problem-solving is restricted to humans and other large-brained vertebrates.

Testattu Vegem Jauhis, ehdottomasti jatkoon.

[Edit: I'd like to request no more boosts for this post for now - my DMs are still open to, and please do still forward this to specific folks you think might be interested. I've got so many responses that it's going to take me a while to get to all of them - which I will. ❤️ you all for being so supportive of this idea.]

I have an offer to make: do you want to run an instance on the fediverse for a group that's underrepresented here?

I'll pay the bills. Period.

I'll do admin if needed (software updates and the like). But you decide what kind of community you want it to be, so you put together the mod team.

DM me.

Doctors in London have become the first in the world to cure blindness in children born with a rare genetic condition using a pioneering gene therapy.

The children had leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), a severe form of retinal dystrophy that causes vision loss due to a defect in the AIPL1 gene.

After treatment, four children can now see shapes, find toys, recognise their parents’ faces, and in some cases, even read and write.

The first book of 2025 turned out to be The Deep by Rivers Solomon. It tells the story of Yetu, who is the historian of her ppl, the descendants of African women thrown overboard from slave ships. Holding the memories of all of their ancestors is hard on Yetu, so she flees in hope of finding some peace.
A powerful story, though the execution didn't fully work for me. Would still recommend, because the book is well written and explores interesting themes. 3,5 ⭐

Almost 90% of Norway’s mainland kittiwakes have disappeared in the past four decades, as numbers of other seabird species also continue to fall. Between 2005 and 2015, the number of seabirds on the Norwegian mainland dropped by almost a third
